THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEW:
?Friday, July 28, 2023:?This week’s wine is a ripper of a Grenache. I have always loved Grenache, but in recent years it has become a love/hate relationship as number of wineries have started making lighter style Grenache with around 12.5% to 13.5% alcohol – these wines are, in my opinion, thin, green, pissy wines. Grenache needs lots of sunshine to achieve ripeness and full flavour. Sure, some of the old-style 15.5%(plus) alcohol Grenache were a bit OTT but similarly most of the under 14.0% alcohol ones I have tasted have been wishy-washy wines without those glorious rich Grenache flavours. If you want to make a light-style red, p-l-e-a-s-e, please, grow another variety!!! Like say, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Blaufr?nkisch, Zweigelt, etc., rather than make insipid Grenache.
?Today’s wine is an exception in that at 13.8% alc/vol it delivers lashings of fabulous flavours and is an absolute ripper. The wine is the Yelland & Papps Barossa Valley Old Vine Grenache 2022 (Single Vineyard). It has a good density of purple/red colour, a subtle bouquet of ripe red and black berries with an ever so slight hint of exotic spices. The palate is quite big, utterly gorgeous, rich, mouth-filling with a good length and is superbly balanced with a svelte, long, lingering finish. It is raring to go but will cellar well for quite a few years. TRULY OUTSTANDING!!
