THIS WEEK’S WINE REVIEW:
?This week, rather than talking about a single wine as I usually do, I’ll be talking about the wines that I tasted last week when I attended the “Adelaide Hills Wine Show Trophy Showcase”, held at the Good Gilbert restaurant, in Goodwood.
?All thirteen Trophy winners were presented accompanied by a superb and creative four course menu.
?Starting with the “Sparkling Wine of the Show” was the awesome, Deviation Road ‘Beltana’ Blanc de Blanc 2016, which was truly magnificent.
?The white wines were:
?“Riesling of the Show” – Pike & Joyce ‘Ceder’ Riesling 2022 – classic style and a “keeper”.
?“Sauvignon Blanc of the Show” – Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard 2022 ‘Old Cherry Block’ Sauvignon Blanc 2022 – Oh, so Sav Blanc!
?“Pinot Gris of the Show” – Riposte ‘The Stiletto’ Pinot Gris 2022 – rich, round and tasty with a degree of complexity.
?“Best Grüner Veltliner” – Artwine ‘In The Groove’ Grüner Veltliner 2022 – one of the best Aussie Grüner I have tasted in a long time.
?
“Best Chardonnay, Single Vineyard & White Wine of the Show” – Lofty Valley ‘Lani’s View’ Chardonnay 2020 – delightful, crisp and zippy with a degree of complexity.

?
“Best Other White” – Patritti Wines Vermentino 2021 – a very classy and elegant wine.
?
Changing colour we then tried:
?“Best Rosé” – Howard Vineyard ‘400 Metre Range’ Rosé 2022 – a serious Rosé.
?“Best Pinot Noir” – Sidewood Estate ‘Signature Oberlin’ Pinot Noir 2021 – a svelte Hills Pinot that is ideal with food.
?“Best Shiraz, Red Wine and Wine of the Show” – Seven?Eves Wines ‘Whole Bunch’ Syrah 2021 – A truly magnificent cool-climate Shiraz with lashings of tight flavours – a worthy winner.
?“Best Other Red” – Berrigan Wines ‘Shinin Rock Vineyard’ Sangiovese 2021 – showing what Aussie Sangiovese can achieve. Mama Mia, Bellissima!
?“Best Tempranillo” – The Pawn Wine Co Tempranillo 2021 – a delightful Temp in the Spanish “Crianza” style, mid-weight and food-friendly.
?“Best Cabernet or Blend” – Basket Range Wine Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 – a real “keeper” of a cool-climate Cabernet with delightful flavours.
?Each and every one was a superb, top quality wine. Thus this event amply demonstrated the sheer quality of wines being produced in the Adelaide Hills these days. They certainly were the “Best of the Best” and augur excellently for the region in the times ahead. ALL HAIL THE ADELAIDE HILLS!!!
