This week we are headed off to Heathcote in central Victoria, a region which has recently started to be noticed for its superb cool-climate, elegant and sophisticated Shiraz wines. The region which sits atop of ancient Cumbrian red soils only received its own GI (Geographical Indication) in 2002. There are around 60 wineries in the area producing cool-climate wines. The majority of these producers being small are thus unheard of around the country, however, there are a few exceptions, whose wines have impressed. Starting with the colossus of the region, Mitchelton Wines, with their striking edifice, along with other notable wineries in the district such as Domaine Asmara, Vinea Marson, Humis Vineyard, M. Chapoutier Australia and Heathcote Winery.
Well, today’s winery,?ST ANNE’S VINEYARDS, is actually located in nearby Bendigo but the fruit for their stunning?ST ANNE’S VINEYARDS HEATHCOTE SHIRAZ 2020, as the name implies, comes from Heathcote.
Deep, inky-purple in colour with a very attractive complex bouquet of plums, olives, a hint of dried herbs and a smidge of spice. The palate is rich with lashings of rich, ripe fruit flavours, nicely rounded, great texture and elegant, fine grained tannins on the lingering finish.?A real Class act!
This is a?“drop-dead gorgeous”?wine which while divine now, will cellar magnificently for quite a long time – at least 3-5 years and probably a lot longer, becoming even more delightful over the journey.
Do yourself a favour and check out this sensational wine and the rest of the excellent range of wines from?ST ANNE’S VINEYARDS, especially their awesome 2020 Special Release Chardonnay?which is an absolute cracker!!!
Cheers, have a great week, stay safe and always?#chooseaustralianwine?and when possible enjoy?#emergingvarieties.
