Danigala Mountain rock
Have you heard about Danigala, the legendary 'Alien Mountain,' believed to be an ancient astronomical observatory, where early civilizations gazed at the stars, leaving behind an enigma that still mesmerizes us today?
Danigala is located near the town of Aralaganwila in the Polonnaruwa District and has gained fame due to its unique circular shape. It has sparked numerous legends and theories. This mountain is considered a site of ancient culture, and archaeological evidence suggests that it was once a sacred site and an astronomical observation center. When viewed from above, it resembles a UFO landing site, which is why locals affectionately refer to it as the "Alien Mountain”.
Danigala Circular Rock is a fascinating inselberg, an isolated rocky outcrop formed from ancient Precambrian rock. Geologically situated in Sri Lanka's
Vijayan Complex, this structure consists mainly of durable granitoid gneisses, migmatites, and calc-silicate rocks. Often referred to as bare rock mounds or turtleback-shaped inselbergs, these formations withstand nature's leveling processes due to their high quartz content, one of the most stable minerals. Danigala's resilience and unique geology make it a captivating natural wonder.
Danigala Rock, formed through gradual weathering and erosion, showcases a unique circular structure shaped by both mechanical and chemical weathering processes. This geological marvel, often dubbed 'Alien Mountain,' is believed by locals to be a UFO sighting hotspot, with secrets of extraterrestrial life hidden within its rocky embrace. Both local and foreign tourists are captivated by Danigala Rock's resemblance to a giant roundabout, adding to its mystical allure.
On the northwest slope of Danigala inselberg, remarkable petroglyphs were discovered, bearing similarities to those at Edakkal Caves in Kerala, India. Tentatively dated to 5500 – 4500 BC, these carvings feature dominant bind runes and are compared with other archaeological sites in Sri Lanka and South Asia. Evidence of early habitation was found between two gorges. The largest petroglyph measures 7.5 meters long and 5 meters high. Scholars believe that some geometric symbols represent an ancient lost astronomical counting system. This adds to Danigala's mystique, linking it to ancient celestial observations.
According to astro-biologists and exo-biologists, these petroglyphs are closely related to astronomy. They depict geometric patterns, primary images of men holding weapons, humanoid figures, peacocks, animals, steps, leaves, and plants, covering almost the entire space of the cave.
Danigala's rich history, unique geological features, and mysterious petroglyphs continue to intrigue and captivate those who visit. Whether viewed as a sacred ancient observatory, a geological marvel, or an 'Alien Mountain,' Danigala stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with our planet's hidden wonders. As researchers and explorers delve deeper into its secrets, one thing remains clear—Danigala's story is far from complete.
