The Dangers of Hustle Culture: Entrepreneurs and Mental Health

The Dangers of Hustle Culture: Entrepreneurs and Mental Health

Did you know that entrepreneurs are twice as likely to suffer depression than the general population? We're also 70% more likely to experience addiction, and our divorce rate is five to ten times higher than the general population. Our businesses significantly impact our mental health. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at Tap the Potential, we are dedicated to helping business owners create work that supports life, not the other way around.?

First and foremost, I want you to know that if you are an entrepreneur feeling burnt out and overwhelmed you are not alone. 50% of entrepreneurs feel as though no one understands the stressors they experience, so I would like to share some statistics to show you that no matter what it looks like online, other business owners are feeling the same way that you are.?

  • 9 out of 10 entrepreneurs report that they are burning out
  • Almost 9 out of 10 of us feel that our business cannot run effectively without us??
  • 8 out of 10 of us report our mood fluctuating based on how the business is doing.
  • 1 out of 2 of us have neglected basic needs such as sleep, healthy eating, or social interaction in the last three days because of work.
  • 8 out of 10 of us find it hard to switch off and not think about the business.?
  • 1 out of 2 of us, on any given day, feel as though no one understands us and the stressors we experience.

"Hustle culture" often glorifies long hours at the expense of mental health. At Tap the Potential, we are working to help entrepreneurs break away from this mindset and take a new approach to business that fills your cup instead of drains it.?

On a recent episode of the Profit by Design Podcast, I sat down with our Lead Strategist, Melissa Kay for an in-depth discussion about the toll of entrepreneurship on mental health and techniques to combat burnout as a business owner. You can listen to the full episode here. One key takeaway that I would like to share here is that burnout recovery is possible. One of the most healing experiences you can have as an entrepreneur is to open up to a fellow entrepreneur and hear them say, “I felt that too.” I've had that experience. I know what you're feeling.?
