I was in the middle of writing my first book, Beyond Good, when the world shut down in 2020. We were navigating an uncertain world — trying to balance the parallel duties as authors and as parents. We re-positioned part of the materials to discuss how the pandemic might impact the macroeconomic trends. While at the same time, trying to home school the children.
It was one of the toughest times as a parent. And I remember those days well.
Fast forward to events unfolding this week. I find myself, once again, contemplating how I might need to re-position my content, while balancing my own mental well-being and tending to the kids. They are older now. And they are asking more questions — questions that I don't have answers to.
How will the election results change what we need to focus on? How will regulations change our industry and how will consumers fare? What should be our call-to-action? What should I do —?to acknowledge what many people in our communities are feeling, and to try to find a potential path forward against a backdrop of uncertainty?
I used to tell the kids that as long as what I do can help change the hearts and minds of a few, and they go on to influence and change the hearts and minds of a few more, then it's good cause —?and a movement —?that is worth fighting for.
This is also why the logo of Unconventional Ventures is a dandelion flower. The company was started with a hope —?that everyone will have the chance to try and succeed, regardless of where they are from; that good ideas will propagate and take root, like dandelion seeds, and traverse far.
It's been seven years. And the journey isn't getting easier.
But I still believe in the mission.
Because anything less is simply non-negotiable.

What I am reading ...
[1] Saudi Arabia is planning a new artificial intelligence project —?Project Transcendence —with as much as $100 billion as it seeks to develop a technological hub to rival the neighboring United Arab Emirates.
"The project may ultimately include multiple government bodies and will be aimed at funding AI infrastructure and startups, as well as bridging the kingdom’s gap with the US and China on AI expertise."
[2] Is AI smarter than a five-grader?
"Several Apple researchers have confirmed what had been previously thought to be the case regarding AI — that there are serious logical faults in its reasoning, especially when it comes to basic grade school math."
[3] For families that qualify for free or reduced lunch, having to pay as much as 60 cents per dollar in fees when paying for school lunches electronically can be a huge burden. That will change beginning 2027 according to the USDA.
"In its review of the 300 largest public school districts in the U.S., the CFPB found that 87% of sampled districts contract with payment processors. Within those districts, the companies charge an average of $2.37 or 4.4% of the total transaction, each time money is added to a child’s account."
