Dancing in the Street

Dancing in the Street

Known to me as one of the safest cities in the world, Hong Kong has an unlikely reputation for upholding one of the highest standards of personal safety I have ever seen.  We proudly sit within the top 20 safest cities in the world, with some of the lowest crime rates. Petty crimes exist, but nowhere near the scale of other metropolitan cities. Even as social unrest reached its peak in the latter half of last year, Hong Kong maintained its overall safety – safety for tourists, and safety for residents.

Putting the obvious signs of personal safety aside, Hong Kong also protects its citizens in other ways: by keeping the city clean. Not only are the people conscious of environmental hygiene, but so is the government. Street sweeping, street washing, and generally keeping our streets clean maintains a priority for everyone, and it shows.

When I hear of violent crimes in other metropolitan cities, it only makes me even more grateful for the home I have chosen for myself and my family. In no other city will I be as reassured while knowing my children are out in the middle of the night, and in no other city can I drop my wallet on the streets only to have it end up safe and untouched at a police station the day after.

For all these reasons, Hong Kong is my home, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
