Dancing My Heart Out
Part One
Setbacks are highly essential in life to move forward at the right pace. We hardly believe that 'everything happens for a reason!'
If you are too ambitious or soaring high up the sky chasing your little dreams, sometimes life offers you a speed breaker or a jerk. This is just to shake up your foundations so that you can grow or expand endlessly. This is the best time to look back and celebrate your growth!
Childhood
When I was a baby girl, my Grandpa recited endless poems about how 'coyness' was just what I needed to be his 'Perfect Girl!'
I tried hard to ace the newly acquired gender role, even though I never had the word 'shy' in my dictionary.
I was an introverted girl who wanted to be a 'Perfectionist' on stage. Frankly, I idolized and wanted to be a graceful dancer like my aunt and my perfect benchmark sister.
And then, it happened to me! The speed-breaker thingy! A major wardrobe malfunctioning with my partner on the center stage!
Thankfully, my partner was immensely supportive and proud of me even though I blacked out. Thanks to him, I regained back my senses and performed!
Like, true performers, we danced our hearts out, took center stage and spotlight, for one last time, before bidding final adieu to my dance career.

Why?
Why? Because I knew that there would be 10,000 keys to unlock if one door closed! Remember? 'Alohamora'
Unfortunately, Mindy Kaling took too much time to direct Never Have I Ever! At this point, I would have told my Grandpa to watch the show and learn what Devi's father taught her!
'You are my perfect girl, no matter what decisions you make or choose in life! You are perfect to me, and that completes my perfect family!'
Yes, not just our parents, but our grandparents too might unknowingly try to pass on some social traumas (or dramas)! But, we need to move on from that and pass on a healthy pattern to our next generations!
PS: My super immature, uber-uncool, control freak high school boyfriend (who was a rock-star cricketer with his trophies all over) asked me, 'Why do you need to show off so much skin? Try Indian classical dance instead!'
Well, I left both! Dance and boyfriend, to focus on my mental peace, career and self-love!
Moral:?Unlearning is more important than learning when you grow up!
PPS: If you haven't watched Never Have I Ever on Netflix yet, do watch it for some amazing parenting lessons. And, if you like my post, stay tuned for the next parts!

2 年Arunima Basu your article made me think of an idea. Why don’t we create a publication for articles like this Aru? We can invite Juhi Singh, she writes similarly and she also shares the sane view with the subject “writers + mental health” — a subject undermined by most people/clients.

2 年Wow, I am glad and honored that I have inspired you to be real not only with yourself but with the world as well. Arunima, it takes a lot of courage. But I am really happy that you finally unveil something most people rather hide. ??????
