Dancing Can Help You Fight Depression

Dancing Can Help You Fight Depression

Since the beginning of time, humans have used dance as a form of expression, celebration and art. And it’s one of the best forms of exercise there is. But did you know it has powerful applications in mental health – in particular, to fight depression? Whether you choose salsa, ballroom, hip-hop, freestyle or modern jazz, dancing can help you to experience a new way of being.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, dance therapy resulted in significant reductions in depressive symptoms among individuals with depression. And further research, published in The Arts in Psychotherapy, suggested that dancing can enhance favourable mood conditions and reduce depressive feelings.

Here are a few reasons why dance therapy is so beneficial:

1. Hormonal impact

As with other forms of exercise, dancing releases endorphins, and endorphins make us happy. Dancing can also increase our levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood. When we engage in practices that lift our levels of serotonin, we enhance our mental wellbeing.

2. Cognitive benefits

When we dance, our mind has some work to do too. Dancing engages cognitive processes such as memory, attention and decision-making. It requires coordination, rhythm and learning new steps, which stimulate the brain, enabling it to be better able to tackle the effects of stress and depression.

3. Emotional release and self-expression

Sometimes, we need to let go of what we’re feeling, and dance provides a safe space for us to do this. Dance therapy lets us connect with our body and emotions, promoting self-awareness and self-acceptance, which are crucial for managing depression.

4. Social interaction and sense of community

The camaraderie experienced through dance can combat the isolation and loneliness often associated with depression, nurturing supportive relationships and fostering a sense of community.

5. Increased self-esteem and confidence

Dance allows us to connect with our body in a positive way. In addition, the accomplishment of mastering new dance moves, and the praise received from instructors and peers can enhance self-confidence and promote a more positive self-perception.

6. Stress reduction and relaxation

The rhythmic movements and focus on music help us to shift our attention away from negative thoughts and worries. Dance also promotes mindfulness, allowing us to be present in the moment, and experience a sense of calm.

Bottom line

Dance therapy has emerged as an effective intervention for combating depression and promoting mental and physical wellbeing. And you can enjoy it at any age. If you, or someone you know, are struggling with depression, consider exploring the transformative power of dance to alleviate symptoms and enhance mental health. But remember, if your symptoms aren’t improving over time, you need to consider reaching out to a professional for help.
