Dance and Nations’ Identity

?Looking at various national dances of various countries and how they vary prompted me to ask if there is a link between the identity of a nation and its national dance.

Question started pouring in my mind such as

-?????????Does a nation enjoy dancing in pairs or in large numbers?

-?????????What meanings does a national dance represent?

-?????????How much warring affected the dance “genre”?

-?????????To what degree the environment and political regimes affect the type of prevailing dances in a nation?

Not all human dance. Birds dance. Marine species dance. Dancing for animals serves mainly attracting the females for mating. In honeybees waggle dancing is a means of communication to inform the direction to a new hive and to the food sources.

Other reasons for dancing in huge numbers to warn off predators. Watch this spectacular video of billions of sardines dancing together. The beauty of synchronization of movement is breathtaking indeed. This is a great example of emerging beauty if individuals follow simple dancing rules.

Another example of collective dances is “The lobed comb jelly: odd but awesome!”

Dancing in pairs is not fascinating for my taste as much as dancing in huge numbers. Yet, this video covers several different dances by different birds. They are pleasing to the eye.

Dancing Birds Compilation (Part 2)

Humans have developed their national dances for different reasons. I found an informative reference on this topic. Typical dances of the world: traditional dances by countries.

One great example the link provides is “En?South Africa?we found a modern choreography, called?gum boot?o?isicathlo. The men wear wellies and bang them against the ground. It derives from the time of?apartheid, in which workers were prohibited from talking in the mines, so they communicated through sounds made with these shoes”. Is this the waggling dance of humans?

Name some nations and their national dances spring in the mind. In Brazil the samba dance. In Spain the flamenco dance.

What thoughts dancing bring to your mind??
