Dan Pink on how to make the most of your mornings

Dan Pink on how to make the most of your mornings

So, if you’ve listened to the show, you might have noticed something that our guests seem to have in common. Most of them have given a lot of thought to their morning routines:

Back in 2019 when we were in person together in the studio

Most recently, there was career coach Jerry Colonna: "I wake usually between five and six. I make coffee or tea and I journal, usually for 45 minutes, maybe an hour, and then I will sit in meditation."

Eat, Pray, Love’s Elizabeth Gilbert devotes her mornings to writing: "So for me, my best self is between six and 8:30, 9 o'clock in the morning. I wake up really sharp so I take those two hours for me. Then I give a much degraded version of myself to the rest of the world for the rest of the day."

And then there was Apple’s Angela Ahrendts: "I didn’t have to get up at 5 this morning. I got up at 5 because I love reading and my problem is I’m reading four or five things at once. I should just read one and get done with it."

We’re seeing a pattern here, right? For a lot of folks, mornings are our most important and productive time, and starting them off thoughtfully can set us up for more powerful days. So what’s going on during those first hours of the day, and how do we get the best out of them??

Today, we’re dedicating a whole episode to mornings, and our guest is Dan Pink. Dan’s done a lot of research on timing. He groups people into three categories: there’s the larks—or the morning people, there’s the night owls, and then there’s the third birds, who are in the middle—but they kind of skew morning, too. Our conversation gave me lots of ideas on how I want to shape my mornings. I hope it does the same for you.?

Surprisingly, the insight I gleaned as I listened to Dan Pink talk about peak performance and our individual body clocks is that it pays to be adaptive, flexible and resilient about how we approach our day. If we are part of an office culture where meetings happen early in the day, most of us do not have the liberty to get that rescheduled. So we have to find ways to work within that structure and still manage to bring at least part of our thinking/strategic selves to work in that scenario. The same goes for managing the home, our kids, doctor visits, and a bunch of repeat errands and tasks that cannot be scheduled as per our body clocks. Making the best of the situation by leveraging our skills, experience, support from family / colleagues, planning for certain things in advance, preparing for contingencies are all different ways to cope with the time constraints of the world.
