My Journey of Discovery

Navigating life undiagnosed with Autism and ADHD, or AuDHD, was like trying to solve a Rubik's Cube with a missing piece—confusing and a tad unfair! Elementary school and middle school were a breeze, as I was high functioning and gifted. The social awkwardness seemed a childhood quirk. Then I got to high school, which was an overwhelming maze of social expectations, prompting me to leave it behind and carve out my own path. I never felt seen, heard, or understood by anyone except for Ms Ashman and Duke, the School Resource Officer.

My youthful trials and tribulations didn't end at exiting high school. I ended up becoming pregnant at 17 and had my first child at 18! Becoming a parent on my 18th birthday? Talk about a plot twist that would make a soap opera proud! My mom always tells the story of me wearing toe socks in the birthing room. She remembers it being such a surrel experience: Her baby having a baby. After that came marriage, 3 more kiddos and a QUICK divorce. If you blinked, you would have missed it. My ex and I were always friends, really good friends who care for one another. We were too young to know what love was.

Finding Unexpected Connections

In times of adversity after the divorce, I discovered solace in an unexpected place—the virtual World of Warcraft. Who knew my partner was just a Death Knight in shining armor, just a dragon-slaying quest away! A short trip to meet him turned into a 2 year detour when my funds were cut off by a disgruntled party, who was a joint owner on my account, while out of town. Talk about a change in plans!

Returning home meant diving headfirst into a custody battle for my children, fought passionately through courtrooms and research at the Richmond County Law Library. My tenacity eventually paid off, winning both temporary and full custody. I don't want to brag, but I won against an actual lawyer, while I represented myself. This victory wasn't just mine but a testament to the power of unwavering commitment and a supportive community.

Building a New Foundation

Moving to a larger house and eventually purchasing our own marked fresh starts for our family. But life, ever the prankster, threw a banana peel my way, leading to a career epiphany. I was ready to build my own basket after realizing that relying on corporations was like trusting a cat to guard your sushi.

Amid these realizations, SkillZilla?? was born—a brainchild inspired by the gap in life skills education, as seen in my own brood. The enthusiastic response to my adulting playbook, filled with 193 essential skills, ignited a passion within me. But while SkillZilla?? is part of my journey, it's the larger mission of Damsel in Success that takes center stage here. We're here to help transitioning teachers, women, and entrepreneurs reach their goals.
