Damar Hamlin - 3 Lessons.

Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills went into cardiac arrest following a hit in Monday’s football game. He stood up following the hit, stepped backward, and collapsed.?It was scary to see, and I join the world in praying for his recovery. I also celebrate the people who surrounded him and the lessons they provided us all last night.

Experts taking action make a difference. It’s easy to see someone who is a master at what they do. We saw it last night. Trainers were at Hamlin’s side literally within 10 seconds. They administered CPR for 10 minutes and restored his heartbeat. The ambulance was on the field in less than 5 minutes. Work to master your craft, whatever it is, and then act on it to make a difference where, when, and how you can.

We truly are better together. During the incident, we saw teams circled together…both teams…praying, embracing, and crying. Their differences and their jersey colors didn’t matter; it was humanity at its core. Healthy competition and productive discourse…even a little sass…is good and important, but we need to center on respect and finding the common ground that so clearly exists between us all. It is difficult with divisive politicians in all parties, journalists who focus on sensationalism to drive ratings, and our own egos that also get in the way. With deliberate attention and focus on the common good, though, we can all be better…together.

Our lives are truly a treasure. There are around 1.1 million football players in high school. Only 6.5% make it to NCAA Division 1, 2, or 3. Of those, only 1.6% ever have a chance to play in the NFL. Damar Hamlin is 24…he did that…he made it to the NFL. But in a moment, this strong athlete and success story showed us the fragility of life.?Things can change in an instant. We owe it to ourselves and the goodness in our lives to practice gratitude and take time to live our lives to their fullest.

I’m optimistic for Damar Hamlin that he will recover and move forward in whatever manner is best for his health. For the rest of us, I’m hopeful that we will lift him up and pause in our own life’s moments to learn, apply, and grow.

As a proud Buffalonian, prayers to Damar Hamlin and his family. We are heartbroken and devastated by seeing one of our own "go down" like this. It was high time to actually see an organization that made it's players/people its first priority. It's truly ironic coming from a profoundly male dominated organization where literally winning is everything. Not this time, and for the first time for all the world to see. I hope all organizations will do a gut check and see if their policies/protocols reflect a proactive approach to extend some type of support for their people not only in a time of crisis but investing in and supporting the growth of their most valuable assets in an on-going basis. The positive impact on the people, company and bottom line would be significant. Let's keep doing better. #elevatecorporateresponsibility #supportyourpeople
