DALL-E vs Proverbs, Part 2!
I really loved the previous installment, can't help but to make more of those!
Say what you like about the art Dall-E and it's counterparts generate, call it "assets" instead of art if you want, but these types of GPTs can do incredible things and visualize stuff you would not think to draw or paint!
A favorite Italian proverb of mine is "Saltare i fossi per lungo!" (Jumping trenches the long way). It refers to a concerted effort that is ultimately counterproductive and futile. Consultants encounter that daily... Well, DALL-E did not disapoint!
It really gets the point across here! That said, it seems that the push to get the man airborne was so forcefull it broke stone! Perhaps he will get over the trench, even if it's lengthwise...
Many proverbs in the Latvian language have a very ironic tone, like this one: "Ne?em no dzīves visu – neaiznesīsi!" (Don't take everything from life – you can't carry it all!).
The AI really nailed this one! The shocked expression, the overabundance of life's gifts and how they all keep falling away. Even the bag from "Goxoug", a top Latvian supermarket is present in the picture! ;-) Well, let's not be like this guy!
Much more serious is the German proverb of "Von Nichts kommt Nichts" (Nothing comes from nothing). It's really more of a truism than a proverb, but it's fitting none the less!
I guess the stereotype is that Germans are very dilligent, and so we get this. Personally, I would expect the "nothing" side to be far more barren, but it does get the point across!
A proverb that has more many similair counterparts in other languages is the Norwegian "Det er bedre ? g? p? isen enn i vannet" (It's better to walk on the ice than in the water). Meaning that a calculated risk is better than a guaranteed failure.
Too easy for the AI (AIrtist?)! The man wearing the massively spiked boots is engaging in a spot of Nordic Walking and is clearly doing better than the frozen man just ahead of him. Just as the proverb suggests!
I wanted to challenge the AI with the next proverb, so I put in one of my favorite Russian proverbs: "Простота хуже воровства" (Simplicity is worse than theft). This is very often misunderstood. The proverb does not decry simplicity, but rather the correct translation would be "simplemindedness". And neither is the thievery shown to be a virtue. The point of the proverb is that a malicious actor (a thief) would seek personal gain above all and to detriment of others and therefore be predictable. An overly simpleminded person, on the other hand, may take action with unpredictable goals and openly act to his or her own detriment, making dealings with that person unpredictable and dangerous. So how did DALL-E do?
Well, it did surprisingly well! Both are up to no good, but you wouldn't expect it from the man on the left. And that's the point the proverb is making.
And let's close of with not so much a proverb, but a blessing. The Irish blessing of "May you live as long as you want and not want as long as you live!" is an interesting one because of wordplay - "to want" means to desire something, but it can also mean to lack or be lacking ("was found wanting").
While this is probably the simplest of all images AI generated today, I can't help but to remark how sweet that is! The AI went over the traditional values of family (see the pictures), home (two of them) and literally topped of the picture with, not four, but a whopping five leaf clover! Must be for that extra extra luck! Very Irish indeed. I can only wish this much happiness on you, dear reader.
I'll definitely post more of those. I will look into proverbs form Asia, Africa and South America next time.

Maybe this is the "want" ! Thank you Fjodors Tjulkins , I really enjoyed that little experiment ! Ps. Great proverbs from Lativa and Norway!
