Good Morning Gentle Reader…. For me today it's a trip to Malaga, my wife is operating on people with Cataracts today so she has asked me to drive her into the clinic.. I don't mind as I love Malaga, think I may even move there or at least close by.. So Bella and I are up before the lark this morning although we do have company, Cicada Beetles going crazy trying to attract a partner by rubbing their legs together, to tell the truth I don't find the sound unpleasant and it does tell me that we are in a semi tropical region, Green Parrots in the day time Cicada at night and Flamenco Dancers in the restaurants...the joys of southern Spain..
TAIWAN TRAIN COMPANY WANTS APOLOGY FOR 'DEMON DOLL' PASSENGER…. A train company in Taiwan has complained to Warner Bros for allowing an "unauthorised passenger" on one of its trains, it is reported. The passenger in question was Annabelle, the "demon doll" from US horror film Annabelle: Creation, which hit the box office on the island earlier this month. According to the United Daily News, Taiwan's High Speed Rail (HSR) complained to the entertainment company after seeing pictures of the doll riding on one of its trains on a Warner Bros Facebook page. HSR spokesperson Chung Jui-fang told the paper that the doll had "violated regulations", as anyone who wished to film or take photographs on their trains for commercial use was required to fill in an application form asking for consent. Warner Bros has since removed the photographs from its social media pages, saying they were provided by a third party. According to Taiwan News, the entertainment company's legal team "has begun working to resolve the issue".
RUSSIAN GRANNIES FIX THEIR OWN ROAD…. Never underestimate the power and determination of the Russian babushka.. A group of Russian grandmothers grew so tired of waiting for the local authorities to fix their road that they hired the necessary equipment and did the job themselves, it's reported. After being told by officials that the pothole-covered road through the village of Svedniy Bugalish in the Urals was "fine", the group took up shovels and wheelbarrows and seemingly put the local authority to shame, Rossiya 24 news channel says. According to Urals-based Ura.ru website, the group - including a 90-year-old babushka - chipped in 500 roubles ($8.50; ￡6.50) each for a truckload of gravel and set to work with the help of two men. Pictures posted by popular tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda before they started work show the extent of their challenge, with pools of water lying in the road through their village. The local administration said after an inspection last month that no repairs were necessary, despite increased rain in the area. But it's not the first time villagers have had to fix roads in the area. Earlier this summer, two young men used stone and cold asphalt to fix their street under similar circumstances, Ura.ru reports.
Response on Russian social media has been scathing, with news aggregator Rambler's VKontakte page saying "This story is so Russian that it is scary. Theses old ladies are heroes of our modern age."
BELARUS AT 'WAR' WITH IMAGINARY COUNTRY OF VEYSHNORIA…. A country invented as part of military exercises in Belarus has caught the imagination of locals, who have created a foreign ministry, flag, history and even its own Wikipedia page for the fictional nation. Veyshnoria is one of three states made up for the Zapad 2017 military drills, which - according to the scenario - seek to invade Belarus and sow discord between Minsk and Moscow. The map of the exercise, made public during the General Staff briefing on 29 August, shows Veyshnoria in the north-western regions of today's Belarus, with Vesbaria and Lubenia lying in Lithuania and Poland, the Nasha Niva website reports. Some commentators noted that the border between Belarus and Veyshnoria "strongly resembles" the border between the Soviet Union in Poland in 1920-39. "This means that under the Zapad 2017 scenario, Belarusians will have to attack the territory of Belarusians," lifestyle website kyky.org said. Political historian Pavel Usov, blurring reality and fiction on his Facebook page, said that "Veyshnoria is a peaceful democratic country which has never been aggressive towards its neighbours. "It is likely that Moscow provoked a conflict between Minsk and Giradis (the capital of Veyshnoria) in order to fully establish control over Belarus and not allow Veyshnoria to join NATO and the EU," he said, reflecting on the real-world tensions surrounding Ukraine's desire to link with the West.
PLUMBER REACHES SUMMIT OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO…. After heart surgery, Joshua Strahl fulfills a lifelong goal. "I summitted!" he declared Wednesday on Facebook, calling the climb "epic." Strahl took up extreme endurance sports after recovering from a life-threatening heart infection in 2009. He has traipsed through volcanoes in Iceland, ran marathons in Hawaii and wants to spend three months hiking the Appalachian Trail. His Kilimanjaro climb is raising money for charity. Always looking ahead to the next challenge, he reveals a secret, his goal for the future. "One of my dreams is to run across the United States," he told us during a recent interview. Forrest Gump would be proud. Strahl envisions running a marathon each day in a different city, stopping to give motivational speeches at schools along the way. But first, he's got to come down off that mountain.
CABLE GUYS UNCOVER 1,500-YEAR-OLD GREEK MOSAIC…. Sometimes the cable guy is late. Sometimes the cable guy gives you HBO for free. And other times, like this summer in Israel, the cable guy discovers history. While installing cable wire underground, technicians in Jerusalem came across something extraordinary: an ancient artifact.
It was a 1,500-year-old mosaic floor with a Greek inscription. Archaeologists were called in and determined that the find was likely part of the accommodations at a monastery in Jerusalem. "The fact that the inscription survived is an archaeological miracle," said David Gellman, the director of the excavation. "We were about to close the excavation, when all of a sudden, a corner of the mosaic inscription peeked out between the pipes and cables. Amazingly, it had not been damaged. Every archaeologist dreams of finding an inscription in their excavations, especially one so well preserved and almost entirely intact."
