Daily Pulse: Where Are All the Electric Cars? The Jeff Bezos-Elon Musk Space Race Heats Up, A Penny Far Thing
Bait and Switch: For all the hoopla, there really aren't many electric cars— some 330,000 — on the road. What gives? Dealers hate selling them, reports Matt Richtel in The New York Times. Part of the reason may be that EVs require less maintenance, which hurts where the real money is made: The service bay.
US GDP grew at a revised 2.1% annual pace in Q3, up from initial estimates of 1.5%. The report "suggests a resilience that could help give the Federal Reserve confidence to raise interest rates next month," writes Lucia Mutikani of Reuters.
Star Wars, Billionaires Edition: Jeff Bezos bragged that Blue Origin, his private spaceflight company, had launched and landed a rocket for re-use. Not so fast, said Elon Musk, finding it necessary to remind Bezos about similar (not identical) achievements by his own SpaceX. In other news: Bezos has had a Twitter account since July 2008, and this was his first Tweet.
A Penny for your Thoughts: The Treasury Department is considering ditching the penny, the lowly coin that most of us dump in kitchen counter jars and "Leave One/Take One" trays. Don't hold your breath. This is an old debate; the cost of minting pennies has long surpassed their face value.
No Free Lunch at Google: As part of its transition into a conglomerate, Alphabet is changing a big accounting rule: Subsidiaries will now be "charged for using corporate services such as computing, recruiting and marketing," sources tell The Wall Street Journal's Alistair Barr.
See You Sell You: As the Black Friday approaches, backers of "Beacons" are wondering where it all went wrong. Never heard of "Beacons?" That's only part of the problem with the Apple tech that allows retailers to target potential buyers within a few feet. One entrepreneur in the space says give it two more years.
#Chart: Pfizer and Allergan is the latest (and largest) example of US companies finding a way to incorporate overseas to pay less tax. But, as Quartz reports, they really don't have to ...
Dog Fight: Turkish warplanes shot down a Russian fighter jet that Ankara insists had violated the nation's airspace, bordering Syria. Russian president Vladimir Putin called it "a stab in the back." At the very least, the incident will complicate the strange-bedfellows efforts to fight the Islamic State.
