Daily Pulse: 'Megabrew' Still a Maybe, Dell Zigs While Tech Zags, End of the Nobel Season

If at first you don't succeed... You have to hand it to Anheuser-Busch InBev: they're working hard to court SABMiller. Three offers have already been rejected by the smaller beer maker, but the behemoth behind Budweiser may put forward yet another bid before Wednesday's 'back-off' deadline. (If an offer hasn't been accepted by the 14th, UK law forces AB InBev to abandon the approach for six months.) The offer may be somewhere in the £43-44 range; SABMiller is hoping for £45. The Guardian has some choice words about this 'joyless takeover': "This entire adventure embodies the reasons why the debt-fuelled takeover culture, breeding corporate goliaths, eats away at consumers’ trust in big business."

Dell is zigging while everyone else zags. As tech giants like HP and eBay break into pieces, Dell is shirking the 'smaller is better' trend. As early as today, the company may announce its $50+ billion takeover of EMC—the biggest takeover deal in tech history. In acquiring the storage provider, Dell hopes to expand its offerings for network servers, corporate software, and more. As the New York Times points out, and the company itself certainly realizes, "no longer can a company like Dell thrive simply by making personal computers."

We have a new Nobel-winning economist. The Nobel Prize for Economics is a bit controversial: for one, it's not part of the original lineup. It's technically called the 'Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel', which doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as 'Nobel Peace Prize'. There's also plenty of debate about whether or not economics can really be considered a science. Despite the controversy, though, publications treated today's award like the hottest thing out of DraftKings: WSJThomson Reuters, The Guardian, Foreign Policyand others placed (metaphorical) bets on the winner. Angus Deaton, a Scottish economist based at Princeton, ultimately took the prize for "his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare."

Imma let you finish, Facebook, but: YouTube is still the biggest game in town for music videos. Even as Facebook's video offerings grow, YouTube's strength in music distribution is only increasing. We all remember Psy's mega-hit "Gangnam Style," which became the first video to pass a billion views, but the viral sensation is no longer the only member of the Billion-View Club. And videos are hitting a billion much more quickly. It's perfect data to emerge as YouTube renegotiates deals with music labels.

Oh great!....I see myself 20 years from now with a Dell computer,an Apple phone and a fridge full of Budweiser, because that's all there is. Here's the kicker: I already have a Dell account because I purchase computers for my property. I just got an iphone this year because my flip phone couldn't do emails. I don't like Budweiser.....I prefer microbreweries.... So I am right in line with 2 out of 3 of the biggest corporations in the world. Lucky me. It appears that the science fiction movies are coming true. We all stand idly by while mega corporations take over the world. Innovation and advancement are being stifled because there is no competition. Competition is good for every market. It is how we, as humans, advance. Something tells me this does not bode well for the future of humanity. Our government forced the breakup of Bell Telephone early in my life because they knew it was a bad idea to have only one company servicing the entire nation. We have lost some freedom when all of our computer, phone and beverage choices are each controlled by just one company. When the choices offered are controlled by just a few, the freedom to choose becomes an illusion. Is it just me, or is no one paying attention to the same thing happening globally?
