Daily Pulse: Martin Shkreli's Bail Woes, A Change at the Top of CBS, Privatize Air Traffic Control?
Karma: Martin Shkreli might have to put up more money to stay out of jail as he awaits trial on securities fraud charges. The “most hated man in America” put up a $45 million brokerage account as security for $5 million bail. But his chief holding was KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, which tanked after filing for bankruptcy in December. Now, his account value is right on the edge. "There's nothing like an indictment to affect the price of shares even if the shares have significant value," Shkreli attorney Benjamin Brafman told the court.
Change at the Top: CBS Chairman Sumner Redstone is stepping down and will be replaced by CEO Les Moonves. Redstone, 92, writes Variety’s Brian Steinberg “has come under scrutiny in recent months due to speculation about his well being and his ability to govern the boards” of both CBS and Viacom, where he is expected to be replaced Thursday.
Take Off: The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has proposed privatize air traffic control, and the 15,000-member union are in full support, “a break in a decades-long policy opposing such a move,” writes Bloomberg’s Alan Levin. Among other provisions in the bill, H.R. 4441, are a ban on in-flight voice calls. The measure has bipartisan support but its fate is difficult to assess.
Another Two Bite The Dust: Two more Republican presidential hopefuls dropped out of the race: Rand Paul, who will focus on getting re-elected to his US Senate seat in Kentucky, and Rick Santorum, who won the 2012 Iowa Caucus but came in 11th this time. The GOP herd is thinning, but still totals eight.
Billionaire Watch: Mark Zuckerberg has overtaken Jeff Bezos as the fourth richest person in the world, as of Tuesday’s close. He’s worth $50 billion — more than all of Facebook was for a few months after its IPO in 2012. Only Bill Gates (#1), Amancio Ortega (Europe’s richest person) and Warren Buffett have more of what it takes to get along.
