Residents have returned to Dubai in full force following the festive season break as I learnt this the hard way when I decided to drive to Mall of the Emirates on the weekend.

Naively, I thought I could pop in and out to get some groceries at 3pm on Saturday.

However, a journey that I assumed would take me 15 minutes, took about 50 minutes in the end thanks to gridlocked traffic leading in and out of MoE. I found myself weaving in and out of traffic just like boxer Muhammad Ali used to duck and dive in the ring.

But I'm happy to see that the authorities in control of Dubai are looking to ease the city's growing traffic levels with a major plan announced over the weekend to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street. What's promising is that it's a significant intersection that will be built, and it will cut travel times dramatically. You can read about it by clicking here.

Quote of the day

“We need to decarbonise without unplugging the modern energy system, because a lot of the developing world will still need it. We live in a world where one billion people in the OECD — the rich, mainly Western world if you like — uses more energy, and is responsible for more of the historical emissions than the other remaining seven billion people” — Majid Jafar, CEO of Sharjah-headquartered oil and natural gas company, Crescent Petroleum
