The dabbler’s results get better at first but once the actions that were getting those initial results appear to stop working they often return to their old habits and behaviors.?The obsessive goes through a series of extreme highs and lows in their level of activity and commitment to achieving their desired results.?They love the results they are getting but once continued improvement seems to have stalled they begin to slip back into their old habits and behaviors.??The master’s progress looks much like the obsessive’s in the short term.?But when you zoom the camera out and look over a longer period of time the master continues their dedicated practice whereas the obsessive falls away.
The life of a master is spent mostly on the plateaus between great achievements.?This is where the dedicated practice is most needed.?Masters have learnt to anticipate and appreciate the stretches of effort required with seemingly no apparent progress.?These are the plateaus between increasingly higher levels of achievement.?This journey is never a straight line.?It is full of twists and turns.?Masters are just as passionate about the journey itself as they are about the final destination.
The following excerpt was taken from a book first published by James Allen in 1902 called As a Man Thinketh.

“The thoughtless, the ignorant, and the indolent, seeing only the apparent effects of things and not the things themselves, talk of luck, of fortune, and of chance.?Seeing others grow rich, they say, how lucky they are!?Observing others become intellectual, they claim, how highly favored they are!?And noting the saintly character and wide influence of still others, they remark, how chance aids them at every turn!?

They do not see the trials and failures and struggles which these people have voluntarily encountered in order to gain their experience; have no knowledge of the sacrifices they have made, of the undaunted efforts they have put forth, of the faith they have exercised, that they might overcome the apparently insurmountable and realize the vision of their heart.?They do not know the darkness and the heartaches; they only see the light and joy and call it luck. They do not see the long and arduous journey but only behold the pleasant goal and call it good fortune.?They do not understand the process but only perceive the result and call it chance.”
