1. DA Reisig is Crafty - But Shows His Hand All Too Clearly

I was interested to see whether Jeff Reisig could actually pull off some sort of transformation and move himself in a reform direction or whether it was mainly smoke and mirrors. Reisig, elected DA in 2006 as a traditional tough-on-crime prosecutor with perhaps a twist, has brought in Measures For Justice to make his prosecution data more transparent. As I pointed out on Wednesday, in that respect he earns legitimate plaudits, but he does need much more rigorous analysis than was shown on Tuesday night. He said, “I’m a big believer that frankly prison is not a place where people go to get well—certain people have to go to prison, no doubt, but a lot of people shouldn’t go to prison because we have better options right here at home. That’s criminal justice reform that we’re going to talk about tonight.”

2. San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Issues an Update after Facing Criticism for Fentanyl Public Safety Video

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department released a public safety video last week after a deputy was allegedly exposed to fentanyl and nearly died from an overdose. However, the video has received heavy criticism from medical experts who have said that it is impossible to overdose on fentanyl simply from exposure. The video released shows body cam footage of Deputy David Faiivae collapsing after handling a white powder.

3. Former Congressman Mike Honda Announces Support for Sajid Khan as Santa Clara County District Attorney 2022

Santa Clara County Public Defender Sajid Khan has been formally endorsed by former Congressman Mike Honda for Santa Clara County District Attorney in 2022. Khan will be going up against current District Attorney Jeff Rosen, who has already served numerous consecutive terms. Rosen has gone unopposed as District Attorney ever since after the 2010 election. Former Congressman Honda’s shared experience serving the LGBT and Asian Pacific American communities links him to Khan, a longtime civil rights advocate.

4. Former Ohio State Senator Leads Charge to Abolish Life Sentences without Parole for Children Nationwide

Peggy Lehner, a former Republican Ohio State Senator, recently wrote an opinion piece in The Columbus Dispatch calling for a federal law to ban life sentences without parole for children.? Lehner was one of the main proponents of legislation that prohibited the sentencing of children to life without the possibility of parole in Ohio. A person is defined as a child when they were under 18 years old when they committed the offense. This legislation was signed into law by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine in January, 2021.
