D365BC: Setting Up Dataverse Connection (Part 1)

Hello there, Dynamics 365 lovers!

Setting Up Dataverse Connection to Microsoft Business Central

Connecting Microsoft Dynamics 365 business central to Dataverse is a great way to lay the groundwork for sharing data with other Dynamics 365 business applications such as Dynamics 365 sales. In this blog, I will explain the requirements for connecting dataverse and show the steps to the create connection. The steps includes:

  • Get a license for Microsoft Dataverse
  • Create an environment and database
  • Connect Business Central to Dataverse using the Assisted Setup Guide

Dataverse is part of the microsoft power platform and is included in both the premium and essential subscriptions for business central.

Let’s now take a look at these new configurations.

Checking the license for Dataverse

First you need to get a license for Dataverse. Here's a tutorial of how you can check your license status.

Select the Waffle-like icon first, then click Admin Center.

Next go to active users, choose your admin user, and have a look on your licenses and apps.

The Powerapps for Dynamics 365 license needs to be available when switching between the essential and premium license. Something like this.

Creating an environment and database.

Now let's go create an environment and database for dataverse. Go to office 365 account and open Powerapps.

Choose Settings and then Admin?Center.

Create a new environment by clicking the +New option. and give it a name, the type of environment can be production or sandbox, click yes because we do want to create a database for this environment. Next choose next and then specify your currency.

Then, choose Next and then specify your currency.

You should be able to see this notification after clicking Save. You've successfully created your own environment after the notification appears,

You can see that I successfully constructed my own environment in this example.

Once you've completed the first two steps, which involve obtaining a Microsoft Dataverse license and setting up an environment and database. The final step, connecting Business Central to Dataverse via the Assisted Setup Guide, will be covered in more detail on the Setting Up Dataverse Connection page (Part 2).
