D365 Project Operations - Resource Management decision tree

D365 Project Operations offers several ways to manage project resources but most clients find it difficult to get a solid understanding of them all.

I have already written a couple of articles on that subject offering different approaches depending on company size, industry or level of organizational maturity.

This time rather than writing another long and winding one I have prepared what I hope is a handy diagram.

The diagram presents what I believe are 3 key decisions that need to be taken when deciding on the best method to manage resources in D365 ProjOps.

I am not going into the detail of pros and cons of using the Schedule Board feature or the WBS feature in ProjOps. Instead I am making an assumption that decision makers at many companies already have a strong opinion on their merits.

The diagram below gives opportunity to review available options side by side and offers a number of advantages and disadvantages for each.

I would be very keen to learn your opinions on this. Please comment, ask questions, like, re-post, and mention your colleagues in your comments. It helps me immensely and it makes it easier for the article to reach a wider audience.

Is anyone using the Extend Booking feature (one of options described on the diagram)? Microsoft has recently added a new Bulk Reconciliation action that allows you to automatically create missing bookings based on assignments using a plugin or a Power Automate flow. Not a game-changer but a tool that may be useful in some scenarios. Read more below: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/project-operations/resource-management/bulk-reconciliation-dev.

Matthew Lazowski I am interested to know what path should be taken if someone has to allocate resources against WBS tasks just like how "Project Server" (Microsoft EPM) used to work i.e. on the same screen while creating the resource usage contour (against tasks) you can see if that resources' time is booked against another project per day/week etc. (and how much per which project) ...

I‘m not as sceptical as you, but the path is legit :) many thanks to have that shared.

Good one Matthew! I fully agree. I think hard booking and softbookings and recommendations could be used to minimize some of the potential negative outcomes. What could bring some additional value to the map IMHO: Usability pro and cons for respective user roles in each of the scenarios. I really enjoyed working with you - hope to hear soon
