D365 F&O Warehouse Management Chapter 2: Exploring primary setups

Hello everyone! I hope you're all doing well. Last time, we were discussing warehouse management, so today we'll pick up right where we left off.

So, moving forward we need to know about more concepts regarding WMS let’s discuss about the more storage dimensions that are enabled when we enable the “use warehouse management process”.

1.?????? Inventory status:

Inventory status is nothing just another dimension which decides either this inventory is available to be processed, used, or consumed.

In business case when we are receiving the items we have the pick & Put works, during the picking process items are available to be used, so instead of being consumed before going to the put location we can maintain the status of “Blocked” so that inventory can’t be used from the picking location or receiving bay door.

we could use this to block inventory for picking items. Still, if we need to restrict.

inventory for sales reservations, we could create a different inventory status, Not for sale, and

prevent these items from being picked while they are blocked.

2.?????? License plate:

License plate is a grouping method to store the same kind of items in a container, the definition of a license plate can vary based on the business industry for example in case of camera industry to keep the lenses license palate can be a basket in case of grocery store it can been a pallet or box.

Inventory Reservation Hierarchy

Reservation is a concept that defines the sequence of the reservation of inventory items for outbound orders, if we are using the WMS inventory reservation for the outbound is mandatory & then we can release the item to Warehouse.

Reservation hierarchies depends on business case it can be following but can also include owner and license plate Dimension:

1.?????? Default: without Batch tracking dimension.

2.?????? Batch Below: Location is preferred to reserve the items instead of batch, just reserve the items at location level and later check if the batch is expired or not based on the FEFO setup.

3.?????? Batch Above: Items are reserved at batch level overriding the location and further we can setup in batches FEFO concept.

4.?????? Serial below: Its same as batch below but with serial tracking dimension.

TIP: You can select any dimension below the Site, Warehouse & inventory status because system first look at what is the status of inventory either it’s available or not(blocked) then it comes to reservation.

Unit Sequence Group

??????????????? Unit sequence group is used to create a combination of units that are valid and using that units’ items can be received using the WMS app in an order way.


??????????????? Let’s say ??????????????each is the base unit.

??????????????????????????????????????????????? 1 Box = 12 each

??????????????????????????????????????????????? 10 BOX= 1 Pallet

So, we can say that 12 each makes 1 box, and 10 boxes make 1 pallet if the user will receive 1 pallet as an unit in mobile device it will be equal to 10 boxes and 120 each units.

Then we need to define the unit’s conversion accordingly. There are more important setup’s that are required for advance processes withing WMS we will discuss that in next parts hopefully.


Work Classes:

??????????????? Work classes are used to link the mobile device menu items and work templates we can create different work classes for different purposes, and it gives us a more control over the work created using the mobile devices. If we don’t put any valid put location type by default it takes the all locations

Work Templates:

??????????????? To perform any task in WMS a work is created in D365 F&O so, the question is on which grounds or basis the work is created then work templates come into consideration. Work templates are used to create the work for different kind of transactions.

To create a new work template, follow the below guidelines.

a.????? Click on new and it will be giving a warning of not valid just put the name and move to the work template details.

b.????? Click on new and select the work type please remember pick always comes first and then put, you can select other work types between pick and put based on the business case but these are the most common.

c.????? Work class id should be same for all lines that is used to identify that this work template is for PO, and you can also attach this with a menu item so, warehouse worker having that menu item can use only specified work templates.

d.????? The most important part is the Edit Query option, system validates the work templates in an order from 0, 1, 2 and so on where it will meet the query it will use that template so, please be careful if you are creating more than work templates template that will meet the criteria first will be used.


Location Directives:

??????????????? See, it’s obvious that we can setup the default receipt location on Warehouse, but where to setup the put location? Pick location for the sales order and put location for the sales order. Then location directives come into picture.

Logic behind the search for the location directives are the same just like the work templates.

Please remember there are many setups on location directives that we need to understand but keeping it simple location directive are used to decide at which location we are going to put the items and from where we are going to pick the items and finally dispatch it.

a.????? Click on new to create a new location directive and select the site and warehouse.

b.????? In the lines you can give break-up based on the QTY like if QTY is from 10 to 20 then which location will be used and if it’s bulk from where it will be picked.

c.????? There are 2 queries in location directives one is for the location and other one is for the Sales order criteria or for which items that is applicable.


Mobile Device:

??????????????? Before using the mobile device, we need to setup 2 things one is work-class id that we have already setup and discussed what is work-class id.

Moving forward we need to setup the work users to use the Warehouse mobile device.

??????????????? Device users: These define the workers that are allowed to access the mobile device and their security access. We can set them up by going to Warehouse management > Setup > Worker:

1.?????? Click on new to create a new work user.

2.?????? Select the person name and attach the default warehouse you can setup the multiple warehouses in the users part and later worker can change the warehouse from mobile device if he want.

3.?????? Profile is used for the packing station we will discuss later.

4.?????? Work fields are used to validate or restrict different options for the warehouse worker.

5.?????? Allow location override means he can change the location, sales over pick give an option for the over picking and then the Cycle count process control.
