Objective: To reach football’s highest level by continuing and being a winner, leader, and impactful person in the NFL by continuing to grow physically, cognitively, spiritually, and socially.
Profile: I am a Philadelphia kid who became a man playing college ball in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I am a 3x All-Conference Linebacker from Cal U of PA in the PSAC. I am known for my work ethic and leadership qualities, as well as for my intense practice habits and attention to detail. I am known for my body control and being able to make linemen miss in small spaces by being able to turn my shoulders effectively. I am certainly known for my relentless run to the ball and physicality when I get there. I take pride in “the main thing” which is, “run, tackle, takeaways.” I am known for my passion, but also my maturity and emotional intelligence to stay present, that comes from the meditation I’ve practiced. I believe in training habits, and then trusting your training. I believe in preparation and hard work. It’s in my DNA, what makes me different is my competitiveness and ability to show up every single day, in every single drill, in every single lift, and in every single meeting taking notes and not shying away from asking questions. What are the principles, values and virtues of Tobey?
The Why in Playing Linebacker
Linebackers are the best position in all of sports. If you love competing, if you love football, you love linebacker. A linebacker needs to be completely locked in because more than any other positions we play both the run and the pass. You’re involved in every play.
I started competing at 4 ? years old when I began racing quarter midget racecars in Pennsylvania. Every weekend growing up, Saturday and Sunday, we’d compete at the racetrack. I started playing sports with soccer as a young kid… There I’d run around the entire field and dominate my opponents, just like gym class and any other chance I had to play. I was born to compete. Racing taught me that only 1 person could win, and that stuck with me in everything I did. “If you ain’t first you’re last.” In fourth grade I started playing football. Coming from Philadelphia, I always loved watching the Eagles, and brought even more passion when I got to play the game myself. I’ve “gone hard” since my first practice and haven’t stopped yet, football seemed like what I was meant to do. The next year, in 5th grade, I started boxing in Philadelphia. I always knew you had to work, but like nothing before, this made me work, and it taught me discipline. This is a year-round sport that requires confidence and strength, knowing no one else is in that ring to save you. By the end of my boxing career, I got 2nd in my weight class at the Philadelphia Golden Gloves, at the age of 15. The only reason I stopped is because my gym closed, and it happened to be at the beginning of my high school football career. I never looked back from being anything other than a football player. Ever since 4 1/2 I haven’t been able to stop competing. It’s in my DNA. I expect myself to be the best at everything I do, and I’m willing to work at everything I do. I did all this while being an A-B student. My diverse sports background, while being a good student, is exactly why I am a Linebacker. A position where you have to play both the run and the pass. A position where you have to have the brains to run a defense and the confidence to communicate effectively. A position where you have to run and hit, things I’ve trained all my life from soccer to boxing to college ball. I play linebacker because I love football. I love football so much I was the defensive leader and captain of my college program and still I ran down on kickoff because there’s no play that’s more of a football play than kickoff. I’ve played Linebacker since starting in 4th grade, and because I’ve been surrounded by the best coaches at every level and because of my DNA to win and work, I’ve kept getting better, and better, and better. I will “go hard” till I can’t no more.
What I Bring to a Team, On and Off the Field
With me on your team you are getting the hardest work in the country. Both on the field and off the field I’m on a constant pursuit. No one runs to the ball the way I run to the ball. I take this into my life personal life by running and tackling opportunity. No one puts in the habitual pre-practice work the way I do. I believe in training good habits, and this translates on and off the field by putting in pre-practice work and meditating and building a habit to be calm and intense, an extreme amount of focus. With me on your team you’re getting a leader, I was voted the Michael Perry Team Captain by my coaches and teammates at Cal U. I am the first defensive player to win that award in Cal U history, that was an honor for me.
I am a leader off the field by being a teacher in a high school classroom. Right now, I am teaching Psychology and World History. Also, at Cal U we ran a pro style defense. A 3-4 base defense, that mainly operated out of our Nickel 4-2-5 package that was a Fire Zone defense that required players to be very conscious of rules, tendencies, and leverage. I was very keen to aligning and playing with proper leverage, while reading my key, and understanding where my help was at. The “main things” of our defense was “Run, Tackle, Takeaways.” The motto of our team was “Tough, Smart, and Dependable.” With me on your team you are getting a football player with very high IQ, on and off the field. With me on your team you’re getting a player who never missed a practice in all of my career. I’m the type of guy to never take it easy, not on a single stretch, sprint, or practice. I go hard at absolutely everything because I know everything is meant to make me better. With thousands of reps, I’ve seen my mylien sheath get thicker, and my abilities grow greater. With me on your team you’re getting a teacher, a coach, a brother, a learner, a fighter, a competitor, a man. In my very first class getting observed as a teacher I brought my supervisor to tears of joy and said, “If we can get the rest of them [student teachers] to be where you’re at now, by May, I’ll be a happy man.” With me on your team you’re getting a player who takes pride and accountability in the game. Last season when the coaches checked how much film we had been watching, I had more hours than most of the coaches in the given week. I expect myself to be the greatest, and I’m not scared of the work it requires to get there. I see challenges as an opportunity to grow and understand that through the uncomfortable situations this is where the most growth comes from. With me on your team you’re getting someone who understands the team aspect of the game and recognizes it takes a village. You’re getting someone who appreciates the lunch ladies, someone who appreciates my teammates, someone who appreciates the coaches, and someone who appreciates the work.
The Legacy I Want To Be Remembered By
I want to be remembered as a winner. I don’t care about the personal fame and glory, but I want the wins. I want to be remembered as someone who had the fighter's spirit and never quit. Someone who was able to fight adversity and have enough grit to stay the course and come out victorious. I want to be remembered as a leader and someone who knew your next move before it happened. Someone who was dedicated not only on the field, but off the field watching film. I want to be remembered as a person who had a positive impact. Someone who made his family proud and was able to be the one who allowed them to take a rest from all their work/jobs. I want to be remembered as a professional who showed up every day, worked his ass off, who mastered the basics, and from there was able to school the masters, similar to Tom Brady and Kobe Bryant. I want to be remembered as someone who gave back to where they came from and someone who made a difference in communities. I want to be remembered as a person who younger people could look up to and see that if you never quit, if you show up every opportunity you have, if you put in the work, and you do this time and time again you can make it to the top and get paid for your effort. They will remember “Tobey.”
Tobey is aware of himself.... whether in space on a turnover or off the field...
