As COVID-19 spreads across the world, more and more of us start working from home. In light of this global shift (and all of our high levels of stress), it is crucial to take steps to avoid miscommunication when working as part of a virtual team.
How do you avoid sending a passive-aggressive Slack message ("let's talk") or an email ("just upload this to your inbox!")? How do you hit the correct pitch on the text? Did you go too far adding that exclamation point?
Below are my top tactical tips for staying connected and supporting your team, even when you're not in the same location:
- Add emojis (but proceed with caution).
- Emotionally proofread your messages.
- Punctuation marks matter even more for one-word or very short sentences.
- Use richer communication channels when you’re first getting to know each other.
- Don’t send emails or slack messages during off hours if it’s not urgent.
