CyNam's 2023 wrapped

As 2023 draws to a close we would like to take this time to thank every supporter, sponsor, and attendee who has played a crucial role in making Cynam what it is today.

As we reflect on all that CyNam has achieved in 2023, we are still looking forward as 2024 is just around the corner. We are very excited to share all the initiatives we have planned and look forward to delivering a diverse range of events, delving into emerging technologies, addressing the pressing issue of the skills gap within the cyber tech industry, and exploring much more.

EmPowerCyber2023

This year was bigger and better with more industry involved than ever. Imagine a room with a vibrant atmosphere where the enthusiasm of 1000 year 8 girls collide with the beats of pop music and the sparkle of glitter, all against the backdrop of immersive cyber security activities.

CyNam can’t wait to explore the possibilities and the future of EmPowerCyber and are excited to start brainstorming in 2024. To see the full Empower highlights please make sure to read our blog:

23.2- Sustainable Cyber - How Cybersecurity Can Enable A Net-Zero Future

Tackling Climate Change is arguably the greatest challenge facing society today with Green and Clean technology set to play a crucial role in steps towards achieving Net Zero targets. With the rapid development of new technology and the need to bring solutions to market quickly, we must not overlook the importance of ensuring they are developed and operated securely and there is an important role for the Cyber industry to play in this. Our second headline event of 2023 explored the development of Clean and Green Tech, the related security challenges, and how the cyber industry can play its part. We have taken the lessons learned from this event and head into 2024 with a green mindset and ways we can make cyber more sustainable in the future.

CyNam 23.1: Emerging Technologies. A Technical 'Pic n Mix'.

A flagship event that aimed to demystify the current landscape of emerging technologies and highlight key developments being made. And that’s exactly what we started to unpack.

We delved into AI, exploring its diverse applications across industries, the rapid pace of its advancements, and the ethical implications linked to its widespread adoption. Additionally, we delved into the intricate world of quantum computing, uncovering its transformative potential and the strides taken in leveraging quantum mechanics for computational prowess. Not to mention the semiconductor sector, emphasising its pivotal role in fuelling technological innovation.

If you missed the event make sure to watch the highlight reel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o99oyeTo7GQ

These are just a few of the events we have hosted this year and we can’t wait to explore new possibilities. As always we welcome any ideas and thoughts so please don’t hesitate to let us know.

On events in 2023, Hollie Wakefield (CyNam’s ecosystem marketing and events manager) said:

?

“It was an honour that my first event with CyNam was at the prestigious Cheltenham Science Festival, with leading industry figures convening in our town to share their knowledge and expertise on how cyber can enable our sustainable future.

?

During that same week, our skills gap event was another highlight, as we brought together industry, students, and academia to explore the practicalities of supporting people to get into the sector. It was clear how much this community wanted to address the skills gap – so much so that we had people sitting on the radiators it was so oversubscribed! This has directly resulted in a series of funded initiatives that CyNam will spearhead – watch this space for some exciting announcements in the new year!

?

Cheltenham and Gloucestershire also represent an exciting convergence of culture and technology which saw us co-host an event with Cheltenham Literature Festival in the late autumn, all about narratives around AI. This was sandwiched between 6 hands-on workshops on generative AI, expertly moderated by one of CyNam’s directors – Mark Adams. We heard how organisations are tackling bias in AI, how government and industry are utilising AI responsibly, and how we may use generative AI for cyber. And that is just the tip of the iceberg – again watch this space for 24.1…

?

Last but certainly not least was EmPowerCyber2023! It was fantastic to carry on Mads Howards’ legacy of such an inspiring and important event for addressing gender disparity in the cyber sector – I think the highlights reel speaks for itself!

?

Bring on 2024!”

CyNam’s MD Chris Dunning-Walton added: "As the year draws to a close, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to every one of you for being a part of the CyNam community in 2023. Your continued support and engagement have fuelled our passion for the mission we strive to deliver in seeing Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and the South West fulfil it’s potential as a vital hub for cyber, ai and future technology innovation. We hope you feel our events have been bigger and better than ever, showcasing useful, thought-provoking content as well as further encouraging the now “Chris Ensor trademarked” concept of engineered serendipity!

Within CyNam this year there have been some changes and we have had to say goodbye to the fantastic Clare Bourne and Eleanor Hardman in the team, as well as Mads Howard , Paul Bentham , James Whittaker and Richard Yorke who all stepped down from our Board after many years service. With change comes opportunity however and we have been incredibly lucky to welcome Amy Cushion , and Hollie Wakefield to the team alongside Daisy North , Charlotte Smith and Tim Atkins . As well as Reid D. , Mark Adams , and our new wonderful Chairperson, Jo Miller to the Board.

?

I have to say another massive thank you to our incredible sponsors this year. CyNam literally cannot survive without your support, generosity and shared belief in achieving something special for the community we serve. I truly believe 2024 is a year of real opportunity and we can continue to make a difference for many people and businesses. CyNam remains a not-for-profit, and we are actively seeking sponsors and supporters for next year alongside having some truly huge plans of what we hope to achieve next. Please do get in touch if you think you can help.

?

Lastly, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish every one of you joy, peace and a wonderful new year ahead."

?

We wish everyone a lovely Christmas and a happy new year!
