Cylinder liner parallelism

At MARSPEC we investigate machinery failures or reliability problems on a regular basis with our customers knowing our independent no nonsense approach finds the root cause and a commercial solution.
One such attendance found reconditioned cylinder liners supplied had large areas of pocketing resulting in water loss from the engine block top even after machining.
The fault after measurement was easy to see and comes from understanding the design and procedures required to build a reliable and efficient machine.
Cylinder liner collar parallelism is a crucial factor in ensuring the cylinder head and cylinder liner seal correctly with even loading.
Therefore poor quality or lack of machining of these faces results in rapid leakage and possible mechanical failure of the fastenings or fracture of the liner walls.
Reconditioning of cylinder liners should include all faces inclusive of cylinder head landings to allow parallelism and therefore correct contact sealing.
Note: next time you fit a cylinder liner check the faces are true and within tolerance or you will be drastically reducing your machines reliability.
