This week I had an opportunity to participate in an experiment on behalf of Ioannis Giannopoulos at ETH Zürich and get first hand exposure as to why Switzerland has been identified as the world most innovative country in 2016 by the Global Innovation Index. 

The premise of the experiment was to compare the multi-tasking speeds of the original Google Glass software and Ioannis modified version, running eye tracking software which allows you to select options by merely looking at it.

I was assigned a number of tasks with both versions. This included walking through the university while having to complete a selection task with the glasses, while my speed and ability to complete the tasks was being measured.

I understand the research is continuing but my unscientific conclusion is that the eye tracking software was quicker and much cooler. An unexpected side effect is that on my way to work the next morning I was imagining I still had the Google Glasses and now my own glasses seem so very ordinary and boring.

My thoughts are now where this technology will lead and whether it will ever make it into the public domain and our daily lives. I pictured taking out snipers on a 'first person style shoot-em up' on my way to work, but wonder what real practical benefits this technology could have? Plus what other innovations are likely to come out of Switzerland in the near future?
