Cyclists vs. drivers: Who pays their fair share?

Cyclists vs. drivers: Who pays their fair share?

Cyclists often take a lot of flack from drivers for being "freeloaders", implying that they don't pay for the use of the roads as drivers do through user fees like gas tax, parking, etc.

I decided to investigate whether these conclusions by drivers are truly fair at the municipal level, in the context of Hamilton, Ontario. Read my full article in the Hamilton Spectator here: https://www.thespec.com/opinion-story/6517603-cyclists-vs-drivers-who-pays-their-fair-share-/. The results may surprise you!

One important assumption is made with regards to this cost allocation: it is assumed that all road use is only personal. Transportation, clearly the heaviest loads on roads, occurs for ALL people, since we all buy products and food. Also, many people use vehicles for business, and cyclists buy homes (requiring the transport of materials and trades and equipment) and hire contractors and have deliveries just like every one else. Roads in Canada are significantly affected by freeze/thaw cycles as well, and deteriorate regardless of use. To say those costs are solely due to the driving of personal vehicles is incorrect. To do an accurate analysis, you must separate the costs that exists as a result of services provided to everyone equally, and those related to a personal choice to use a motor vehicle when an option exists to use a bicycle. As it is, you have broken down the costs to either cyclists or personal motor vehicles, and the conclusions you make based on this erroneous assumption are likely very misleading.

Never trust anything a driver behind the wheel of a motor vehicle says, unless a Police officer is standing there with you. As scary as this sounds, most drivers have no idea what they are talking about regarding many key aspects of driving, and what they do say is almost always selfishly, self protective and always absolving them of any responsibility! Indeed, the simple fact that the true costs of driving a motor vehicle is heavily subsidized, few drivers seem to understand or realize.
