The Great Yorkshire Bike Hunt: How to Snag a Premium Bike Without Going Broke (Or Bonkers)

Well, here we are. It's the end of summer (nearly), and the kids are on the verge of returning to school (hallelujah!). Like many of you fine folks here in Yorkshire, I’m doing the classic end-of-summer customary ‘self-shake-down’: trying to reassemble my life, routine, health, and sanity after juggling a whirlwind of sun, sand, socialising, familial duties, work and, let’s be honest, way too many Champas and ice creams.

Now, I don’t know about you, but there’s something about this time of year that makes me want to do one of two things. Either: 1) hibernate until next June or 2) get my act together, especially when it comes to exercise and fitness.

For me, the choice is clear. It’s time to knuckle down and get back to what I love most: cycling. But here’s the rub—I’ve been procrastinating. Yes, even I, a self-proclaimed bike nut, have been faffing about trying to decide whether to stick with my trusty old Cervelo road bike or splash out on something new. Of course, being a Yorkshire lass, there’s only one thing for it: it has to be in a sale, and it has to be a bargain.

Procrastination Station: To Bike or Not to Bike?

Like me, you’ve probably been blowing your budget left, right, and centre over the summer. The purse strings have been stretched tighter than a lycra cycling jersey after Christmas. But as the leaves begin to turn and the nights draw in, it’s time to face the music: I need to get back into my exercise and cycling routine—and that means finding a new bike. But not just any bike. Oh no, I’m on the hunt for the one—a high-end, sleek, shiny beauty with a nice chunky discount, preferably last year’s model. After all, if it’s good enough for Bradley Wiggins or Mark Cavendish to ride into the sunset on a slightly outdated model, it’s good enough for me.

And if you truly are anything like me—and let’s face it, most of us Yorkshire folk are—you’ll understand the importance of getting this right. We’re careful with our brass, and I’m not about to throw my hard-earned cash at any old bike.

I’ve been at this crossroads for a while. Should I stick with my trusty old bike, the one that’s seen me through countless rides across the Yorkshire Dales, or should I upgrade? And if I upgrade, what on earth do I go for? Another road bike to speed down the winding country lanes? Or perhaps an e-bike, so I can keep up with the young’uns (and fitter, stronger, injury free old’uns for that matter!) on those faster or longer rides without blowing out of my arse for the duration?

But this isn’t just about being stingy (ahem, I mean frugal); it’s about value for money. And with the cost of living what it is these days, thanks to Brexit, the pandemic, inflation and the general economic madness, we all need to be extra careful with our pennies.

The Budget Blues: Why We’re All Tightening Our Belts

Let’s not beat around the bush—times are tough. It’s like the universe is conspiring to keep us all skint. But as someone who’s been through the ups and downs of economic austerity, I’ve learned that there’s a big difference between being tight-fisted and being sensible with my money. And when it comes to buying a bike, I’ve got to be sensible.

Let’s be honest, folks—summer is a money pit. Whether it’s keeping the kids entertained or treating yourself to that “just one more” BBQ with all the trimmings, our wallets, purses and credit cards have taken a hammering. By the time September rolls around, most of us are looking at our bank accounts and thinking, “Oh crap, that escalated quickly.”

And let’s not even start on Christmas! Yes, I know it’s still a few months away, but the shops have already started reminding us that we should be thinking about it. Great. Just what we need—another reason to tighten our belts. So, when I say I’m looking for a bargain, I mean it. The last thing I want is to blow my budget now and end up with morsels of canapes or mince pies for dinner every night in December!

So, when it comes to buying a bike now, it’s not just a case of want—it’s a matter of what the budget can handle. Mercifully it doesn’t mean I have to spend a fortune—especially not when the end-of-summer sales are on.

However, like a hawk, I’m looking for a bike that leaves nothing to be desired. It’s a dilemma, I tell you. But one thing I do know for certain is that whatever I choose, it’s got to be a bargain. And not just any bargain—a proper Yorkshire bargain ??

Why Quality Matters (Even When You’re Counting the Pennies)

These days, I’m a bit of a bike snob, I’ll admit it. I’ve got a taste for the finer things in life—well, when it comes to bikes, travelling, clothes, dining, wine / Champas, men *wink (I could go on). I’ve been riding a high-end brand for a few years now (bike, that is ??), and let me tell you, it’s worth every penny. The smooth ride, the reliable components, the fact that I don’t feel like I’ve been run over by a bus after a long ride—it all adds up.

So, here’s the thing: just because I’m watching the pennies doesn’t mean I should settle for a naff bike. No way. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that when it comes to bikes, you get what you pay for. I’ve ridden my fair share of clunkers, and trust me, there’s nothing worse than being halfway up a hill and feeling your bike give up on life. It’s enough to put you off cycling for good.

And, just because I appreciate quality doesn’t mean I’m not looking for a deal. I’m after that perfect blend of top-notch performance and a price that won’t make my financial adviser and bank manager weep.

That’s why I’m sticking to my guns on this one: I want a decent bike, and I’m willing to pay for it—but I want it at a discount. I’ve got my eye on a few high-end brands that I know will deliver the goods, even if they are last year’s models. After all, who cares if it’s a year out of date? We’re in Yorkshire, not Paris Fashion Week! (albeit there is certainly a time and a place for splurging on posh frocks too). ??

The Endless Hunt: Scouring the Sales for the Perfect Bike

So here I am, on the lookout for a new bike, and I’ve been trawling the end-of-summer sales like a woman possessed. Every website, every store, every whispered tip from a fellow cyclist—I’m on it. Because while I’m after a high-end bike, I’m not about to pay full price if I can help it. And the good news is, this is the perfect time to buy. The shops are clearing out last year’s models to make way for the new stock, and that means big discounts for those of us with the patience to wait and the determination to hunt.

But let’s be honest ladies and gents, the hunt is half the fun. N’est ce pas? There’s something thrilling about finding that perfect bike, the one that ticks all the boxes and comes with a hefty discount to boot. It’s like finding treasure at the bottom of a bargain bin. And when you finally ride off into the sunset on your shiny new steed, knowing you got a cracking deal, it’s a feeling like no other. It’s the Yorkshire way. ??

The Benefits of Cycling: Why It’s Worth the Investment

I could go on all day about why cycling is the best thing since sliced bread, but I’m guessing you already know that if you’ve managed to read any of my previous articles or posts. And you’re reading this, after all, so you’re probably already a bit of a bike enthusiast yourself. But just in case you need a little reminder, here’s why getting out on two wheels is worth every penny—and why investing in a good bike, even in a sale, is one of the best decisions you’ll make.

First up, there’s the obvious health benefits. Cycling is a fantastic way to stay fit, especially as we get older. It’s low-impact, so it’s easy on the joints, but it’s still a great workout for your heart, lungs, and legs. Plus, it’s a brilliant way to clear your head and shake off the stress of the day. There’s nothing like a good ride through the Yorkshire countryside to blow away the cobwebs and leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Then there’s the environmental benefits. In this age of climate change and rising fuel prices, cycling is one of the most eco-friendly ways to get around. It’s a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and do your bit for the planet. Plus, with the price of petrol these days, it’s a lot cheaper than driving!

But perhaps the best thing about cycling is the sense of freedom it gives you. Whether you’re heading out on a solo ride to clear your head or joining a group of friends for a weekend adventure, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of the wind in your hair and the open road ahead of you. It’s pure, unadulterated joy—and let’s be honest, we could all do with a bit more of that in our lives.

The E-Bike Temptation: A Helping Hand Up Those Hills

I have to admit, I’ve been seriously tempted by the e-bike craze (note my previous articles and posts, again). As much as I love the challenge of a good hill climb, there are days when my knees (and legs per se) just aren’t up to it. And that’s where an e-bike comes in. It’s like having a helping hand to push you up those steep inclines, so you can enjoy the ride without the agony. Plus, it means you can go further, faster, and with less effort—perfect for those of us who are keen cyclists but could do with a bit of assistance now and then.

And let’s not forget the practical benefits. If you’re using your bike to commute, an e-bike can make the journey a lot less sweaty—and a lot more enjoyable. Plus, with the price of fuel these days, it’s a great way to save money on your daily commute. And if you’re thinking about treating yourself (or someone else) to an early Christmas present, well, it’s never too soon to start planning!

Too Many Bikes? Nonsense!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But I’ve already got a bike. Do I really need another one?” Well, let me tell you, you can never have too many bikes. It’s like shoes, or handbags, or diamonds, or whatever your particular vice is—there’s always room for one more. And let’s face it, we cyclists are a bit of a breed apart. We’re always looking for the next upgrade, the next challenge, the next excuse to hit the road. So, whatever kind of bike you’re in the market for there’s always a reason to add another to your collection.

And if your significant other gives you that look—you know the one—just remind them of all the benefits of cycling. You’re not just buying a bike, you’re investing in your health, your happiness, and, let’s be honest, your marriage and their sanity too. ?? After all, there’s nothing like a good long ride to keep the nuptials on track. It’s the perfect excuse to get out of the house, clear your head, and come back refreshed and ready to tackle whatever life (or the spouse literally) throws at you.

The Great Bike Hunt: What I’m Looking For

So, what exactly am I after in a bike? Well, here’s my wish list:

  1. A High-End Brand: I want something that’s built to last, with quality components that won’t let me down.
  2. A Massive Discount: Obviously. This is Yorkshire, after all. I’m not about to pay full price if I can help it.
  3. A Comfortable Ride: I’m not interested in a bike that looks great but feels like I’m sitting on a brick. Comfort is key, especially for those longer rides.
  4. An E-Bike Option: As much as I love the idea of powering up hills with nothing but my own two legs, there are days when a little assistance would be nice. So, I’m keeping an eye out for a decent e-bike that won’t break the bank.

Why You Should Join the Hunt: The End-of-Summer Sale

I know I’m not the only one out there on the lookout for a new bike. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or someone who’s just thinking about getting into it, now is the perfect time to buy. The end-of-summer sales are a goldmine for bargains, and with a bit of patience and persistence, you can find a bike that suits your needs and your budget.

But don’t wait too long. These sales won’t last forever, and the best deals are bound to get snapped up quickly. So, like me, start scouring the shops, both online and at the bricks-and-mortar stores, and see what you can find. And remember, just because it might be last year’s model (or even the previous year) doesn’t mean it’s not a great bike. After all, the only people who care about that sort of thing are the ones who aren’t out riding!

Oh, and one more thought on this, let’s be real—there’s no such thing as too many bikes. There’s always a reason to justify a new one, particularly if cycling is one of your Big Rocks in life. Maybe you need a commuter bike for travelling to work, a mountain bike or gravel bike for weekend adventures. Or an e-bike for those days when you want or need to take it easy because you may be feeling a little delicate with ‘the dreaded curse’ (aka period / monthly cycle), menopause issues, prostate issues, or are injured and need a little assistance. Whatever your reason or excuse, I say go for it. After all, it’s not just a bike; it’s an investment in your health, your happiness, and, let’s face it, your sanity.

Takeaways: Why Buying a Bike on a Budget is a Good Thing

  1. Value for Money: Yorkshire folk love a good deal, and there’s no better time to find one than during the end-of-summer sales. Snag a high-quality bike at a fraction of the cost? Yes, please.
  2. Health and Wellbeing: Cycling is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy, especially as we get older. It’s low-impact, great for your cardiovascular health, and brilliant for your mental wellbeing. Investing in a bike isn’t just about getting from A to B for whatever reason. Whether you’re commuting to work or just getting out for some fresh air, a good bike is a practical investment that will pay off in the long run. It’s about boosting your overall healthy lifestyle and enjoying the great outdoors.
  3. Environmental Impact: Opting for a bike instead of driving contributes to a greener environment. Cycling is an eco-friendly way to get around, reducing your carbon footprint and helping to save the planet—one pedal stroke at a time.
  4. Budget-Friendly Exercise: With the cost of living on the rise, cycling is a cost-effective way to stay active without the need for expensive gym memberships. Finding a high-end bike at a discount ensures you get the best of both worlds—quality and savings.
  5. Long-Term Investment: A high-quality bike, even last year’s model, is built to last. You’ll get years of use out of it, making it a smart purchase for the budget conscious.
  6. Retail Therapy with a Purpose: Let’s face it, we all love a bit of shopping. Buying a bike is a way to indulge in some retail therapy while also doing something positive for your health and wellbeing.
  7. Personal Joy and Freedom: Cycling isn’t just a means of transportation; it’s a source of joy and freedom that enhances your quality of life. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of freedom that comes with cycling. It’s pure joy on two wheels, and it’s worth every penny.

Time to Get Cracking!

If you’re in the market for a new bike for yourself or a loved one —or even if you’re just thinking about it—now’s the time to start scouring those sales. Don’t let the end of summer slip away without snapping up a bargain. Whether you’re after a sleek road bike, a rugged mountain bike or gravel bike, a commuter bike, a kid(s)/junior bike, or an e-bike that gives you a little extra oomph, there’s something out there with your name on it.

And if you’re still on the fence, remember this: cycling is more than just a mode of transport. It’s a way to stay fit, clear your mind, and enjoy the great outdoors. Plus, it’s a great excuse to treat yourself to a bit of retail therapy without the guilt. After all, you’re not just buying a bike—you’re investing in a healthier, happier you (and your significant other(s)??).

So, get out there, find your perfect ride, and I’ll see you on the road. Who knows? Maybe we’ll cross paths in the Dales and/or on the Yorkshire roads, both of us pedalling away on our brand-new shiny bikes, grinning from ear to ear, smug in the knowledge that we got a cracking deal.

Happy Bank Holiday, happy hunting, and happy riding!? ??♀???♀???
