Cybersecurity Watch for Week of June 5th

This week there are two significant events taking place in the cybersecurity industry.
Today kicks off the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit, where Gartner industry analysts such as Distinguished VP Analyst Neil MacDonald and guest speakers such as Healthfirst CISO Brian Miller will share their insights into the top trends and technologies for today’s CISOs and other security and risk management leaders to help them better prepare and respond to the evolving threat landscape.
And what does that evolving threat landscape actually look like? The answer to this question, in part, will be revealed in the 2023 Verizon DBIR, which will be published tomorrow, June 6th. The report’s findings, which are based on detailed analysis of thousands of security incidents and confirmed breaches, is one of the year’s most highly anticipated cybersecurity research reports.
The data and information shared at both the Gartner event and in the Verizon DBIR will most likely influence enterprise security buying decisions over the next six to 12 months. In addition, cybersecurity communications and marketing professionals will pull together insights and other learnings shared to shape their company product and executive storytelling.??
Last year, I interviewed 2022 Verizon DBIR contributing author Gabriel Bassett about the report’s findings. At the end of the interview, which you can find here, Basset remarked:

“In general, though, no one should walk away from the DBIR disheartened. It explicitly looks at the areas in which we falter in security without acknowledging the multitude of organizations succeeding. As we say in the DBIR, ‘nothing is perfect. Not people, not processes, not tools, not systems. (Not DBIR authors.)’ But that doesn’t mean we should give up. Security is more like a season than a championship game. There will be mostly wins. A few losses. And almost always, another round on the field.”?
The cybersecurity threat landscape and the industry itself is constantly evolving. Events like the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit and the Verizon DBIR provide not only a great snapshot of how organizations are faring today when it comes to cybersecurity, but also a preview of what’s ahead.?
