Getting into Cybersecurity can be difficult but not impossible. My advice for folks who is trying to break into the industry, would be to get involved within the community. For instance, help your small local businesses with performing risk assessments and providing cybersecurity awareness training to them at little or no cost. Also, performing cybersecurity research and writing articles on different topics in security is also a great way to showcase the skills you have. Another great way to stand out from the crowd is to set up your own home lab installing Virtual Box, Kali Linux, Windows 7, SIEM, and Metasploit to gain practical experience. For instance, a person could make an attack lab to watch log files come through the SIEM. This is only one of the many labs that could be implemented. There is so many different labs that can be created to practice with for both blue and read teams.
Most Cybersecurity study materials can be found online for free to assist in learning the lab building process. Another way to hack into the Cybersecurity field is to practice TryHackMe and RangeForce labs to and showcase your work on your LinkedIn profile each week. Plus, TryHackMe and RangeForce skills gained looks nice on your resume. Remember your LinkedIn profile is like a second resume and be sure to use this to your advantage. And, if you don’t have any experience and you are a college student the best ways to get your foot in the door is by leveraging internships and volunteering to help small business with security policies, etc. This is an excellent way to get your feet wet in cybersecurity and get hands on skills needed to perform the job.

Furthermore, you should continuously be networking in the field with as many likeminded folks as possible. For instance, if you want to become a SoC analyst, Threat Intelligence, or Junior Penetration tester talk to as many people with that job title as possible. One of the biggest things folks can do to break into the cybersecurity industry is to have a clear focus of their career and work toward that goal. Also, keep in mind you do not necessarily need to be tech savvy to have a great career in the cyber industry. For instance, someone could work in cyber security sales or perform cybersecurity research to implement trainings for organizations.
Last and certainly not least utilizing LinkedIn will help you hack into cybersecurity. Overall, networking and surrounding yourself with the right people is the key to becoming successful. Always pay it forward and go above and beyond when helping people and you will hack into cybersecurity.?
