In 2004 the US Congress and President have declared October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The purpose is to help individuals become more aware of threats online and how to protect themselves from those threats. This years theme as designated by CISA is titled “See Yourself in Cyber” which will focus on the PEOPLE aspect of cybersecurity.
People. The most important and critical aspect of not only the cybersecurity sector, but life in general. What does it mean to focus on the PEOPLE aspect? Sure, you will be inundated by security vendors touting how their technology aligns with this year’s theme. Really? How? My perspective is simple. The people aspect needs to be focused on TRUST. Not Zero Trust but trust in the people. This includes co-workers, management, clients and partners. If you do not have TRUST in these relationships no technology will help.
As you consider how to leverage this month’s buzz around Cybersecurity Awareness Month and its focus on “people” start with DO YOU TRUST THE PEOPLE you work with, your employer and security vendors touting their wares. Trust is fragile. Be careful whom you trust.
