Only a few games have been confirmed for Google Stadia so far. Among them are a hotly anticipated first-person shooter and a hugely popular open-world RPG from Ubisoft. While these may be enough to get people using the new Google streaming tech, Google Stadia’s rumored support for Cyberpunk 2077 could really get people’s interest.
The suggestion that Cyberpunk 2077 could come to Google Stadia comes from the game’s developer, CD Projekt RED. During a financial briefing, CD Projekt RED confirmed that it has been in talks with Google about its Stadia streaming service. While the developer did not outright confirm that its sci-fi RPG will be available through the service – whether that be at launch or long after the game has been released – many are taking this as a positive.
Many are also putting a lot of stock into the developer’s words, because it has expressed interest in broadening Cyberpunk 2077‘s audience. In the same financial briefing, CD Projekt RED also suggested that Cyberpunk 2077 could be released on next-generation consoles as well. By releasing the game on new consoles, it would keep people playing for longer. The game could potentially get more sales too, by appealing to gamers who not only will buy it to play the game as soon as it’s released, but also to play it on the most powerful platform available.
Some also see games like Cyberpunk 2077 as being ideal for streaming services like Google Stadia. Large, open-world games that add lots of post-launch content can help to keep people subscribed. They help to establish the streaming service as great value for money. The ability to access huge games with tons of gameplay activities, all of the DLC, and lots of other games also give people more reasons to stay subscribed. This is likely why Google is also in Stadia talks with Square Enix for Final Fantasy 14.
For Google, getting a high profile game like Cyberpunk 2077 would also help it to stand out against other, rival streaming services. An Amazon game streaming service is rumored to be in the works, and then there are services like PlayStation Now and Project xCloud from Sony and Microsoft, respectively. Google Stadia’s price will be important to its success, but so will the strength of its game library.
CD Projekt RED didn’t disclose how far the talks with Google are. However, if Google is able to strike up this deal, it could be a massive win for Stadia before the streaming service has launched.
Cyberpunk 2077 has yet to receive an official release date, but is expected to launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
