Avoid IT Career Tragedy

The traditional approach to Information Technology staff has a flawed strategy that often means tragedy for technology professionals. Instead, we trademarked the term cyberist for our heroes, meaning technology professionals specially trained in the Delta Method for streamlining technology. Our specialists have challenging and fulfilling days always pressing forward with results and following up to get a "thank you".

No matter how large the organization grows, there's usually just a couple of IT people who report to Accounting with no budget, goals, or training - but always expected to work extra during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Even though the world could no longer function without information technology, we're the only professionals called geeks or nerds that work in plain view of the client, responding anytime and anywhere to help, while usually attacked and ridiculed. Unfortunately, there is no bed-side manner taught in any university for how to deal with people and technology problems. If only you could get that certification, but most manufacturers change products annually and you're never given any on-going training. Plus, few organizations have any performance measurements for information technology, other than some vague sense of uptime or general staff perception.

Rewarding Specialty

Many technology people feel unprepared, overwhelmed, and unappreciated. We specialize in cloud and cybersecurity using the Delta Method, because you can't know everything and the most important skill in life is dealing with change.

  1. Worthy cause - Unlike the rest of the industry that simply sells the latest technology fad and bills hourly, no one at Matrixforce is compensated by product sales or paid by the hour. Our mission is to help 1 Billion people leverage competitive advantage using cybersecurity.
  2. Trusting Teams - We use the squad concept so everyone is accountable with consistent process and neither the client nor we are dependent on one person. Lone wolves and random tinkers need not apply.
  3. Worthy Rival - This hunt continues.
  4. Existential Flexibility - Our invention of managed services is now something most IT firms simply say to sell third-party products. With the advent of Vetted IT Support, now customers can avoid sales gimmicks with thorough investigation by government and industry authorities.
  5. Courage to Lead - Everyone on LinkedIn is looking to hire or be hired but how many actually have a recruiting article?

You can only be a Cyberist at Matrixforce or through licensed annual Delta certification.

Mission

The core mission of a Cyberist Specialist is managing and implementing strategies to streamline technology for financial and professional service clients. Cyberist specialists are expected to respond to client requests promptly, follow-up regularly, proactively resolve errors, document and improve repetitive tasks, and implement projects to reduce complexity and avoid risk. Cyberist Specialists configure and troubleshoot cloud, cybersecurity, and virtual or physical hardware and software systems; provide technical assistance and training to system users; and update knowledge base and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Accountability

You always know where you stand as these metrics are reviewed weekly:

  • Retain accounts - provide outstanding support as a team to retain assigned clients.
  • Projects - 10 projects completed annually using Delta methodology.
  • Documentation - 12 SOPs annually and system plan update with each project.
  • Activity - Case follow-up daily. Project completion 15 days. 2 CPE as needed.

Traits

We're looking more for personality and team fit over technical skills:

  • Courteous & humble - no jerks allowed and there's always someone who knows more
  • Superior communication - end up, tell instead of ask, and e-mail is the enemy
  • Client empathy - understand and anticipate common frustrations
  • Strong time management - heavy use of calendar, deadlines, and cutoff times
  • Analytical reasoning - start with the end and work backwards
  • Results oriented - create deliverables, present, implement, and follow-up
  • Resourceful & proactive - schedule the next task on completion of the current task

Competency

BS/BA and 5-7 years of experience required with annual background check. A personal smartphone and home computer with Internet access is expected, as well as a valid driver’s license/insurance and ability to lift or move a PC. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Few candidates will be expert in all of these areas, so we rate on a 1-10 scale and expect to train, but traditional IT Level 2 or 3 skills are required:

  • Windows & Windows Server - setup, manage, and troubleshoot
  • Active Directory - setup domain controllers, AD Connect, and group policy
  • Exchange and SQL - migrate e-mail and decommission Exchange, setup/backup SQL
  • Remote Desktop and Virtualization - setup Hyper-V with replication / RDS with MFA
  • Networking and firewalls - configure DNS/DHCP, setup high availability firewalls
  • Microsoft Online Services - implement, secure, and manage Microsoft 365/Azure
  • Dell desktop, servers, and storage - including high performance computing and EMC

Frequent Questions

  1. How stable is your company? We're an Oklahoma C Corporation established in 1978 with no debt, fully capitalized, and have had salary increases for the last 10 years including during the pandemic. It's a small team purposely since we've just completed the Pumpkin Plan and now growing the model again.
  2. What is the average tenure or turnover rate? The current average is 7 years. 10% of candidates don't make it past 90-day probation. 20% leave because they only want to work on one network or do a single repetitive task.
  3. What is the culture like? Our staff is our first priority. If we teach you to protect yourself and our team, then we'll do great things for clients. Our culture is a combination of Simon Sinek, Donald Miller, Clint Arthur, Malcolm Gladwell, Tony Robbins, Les Brown, Chris Voss, Jocko Willink, and David Goggins. Attire is business casual. There are 5 main rules: Follow the Delta Method, Protect yourself at all times, No drama, Lighten up you're human, and Always be pressing.
  4. What is a typical career path? Like a doctor or lawyer, once a cyberist always a cyberist. There are three levels of Cyberist Specialist and then Cyberist Vice President. It generally takes 3 - 5 years to move to the next level. If you dream of being a project leader or IT manager then we're not a fit.
  5. What is a typical day? Each day starts with follow-up calls to clients followed by a 2-minute huddle. Monday and Friday there is a 1-hour Delta Training which is part business and part technical. One week per month you're on-call and schedule server updates. Days vary from setting up users in Active Directory or Office 365 to configuring servers and firewalls or developing SOPs and System Assurance. We don't deal with consumers, provide development, run cable, support phone systems, or implement accounting packages.

Thanks Tim Zuroff as we're in growth mode and I advise all clients that they should continually have recruiting posts and videos - always looking for the next team member instead of hiring when desperate.
