Cyber Security Trends Affecting Southeast Asian Organizations

Digitization in Southeast Asia has reaped great benefits in the region with considerable growth in different industries such as telecom, e-commerce, aviation, banks etc. On the flip side, the increasing digital exposure has also elevated cyber security threats and affected organizational infrastructure creating loopholes for external entrants to snip sensitive data.

The Southeast Asian countries are highly prone to cyberattacks that have eventually resulted in system breaches or failure in many companies. Over the years, the rapid evolution of technology introduced the internet of things (IoT) where multiple users connect different devices to the internet, creating a higher concern for data privacy and security breach.   • Targeting Mobile Assets: The South Asian organizations are cautious of online threats via different sources and accordingly tighten the gaps to reduce the scope of any breach. However, the trends showcase that the scammers are equally focusing on targeting mobile assets such as smartphones, personal computers, wireless routers etc. to stealthily compromise sensitive information from organizations.
  • Hybrid work threats: Accepting the hybrid work model is the new normal for many organizations since the pandemic.?This mainly includes a balance of in-office and work from home employees. Granting access to remote company networks increased the risk of data breaches overtime. Unprotected public WIFI, phishing scams to access sensitive data, unauthorized network access and unprotected gateways create major security risks in the hybrid work environment.
  • SaaS Threats: Over the years, Software as a Service (SaaS) applications have proved to be valuable for businesses, supporting the remote workforce during the pandemic. The SaaS privacy challenge is evident as all applications are not the same, their security settings and configurations differ and overtime these applications are upgraded with new features, leading to innumerable security and privacy issues.
