Cyber Risk Leaders Readers

Cyber Risk Leaders Readers

2019 has been an incredible year of many personal milestones. How can I forget the many talented Cyber Risk leaders that I've met and had the opportunity to talk through the different CISO and C-Suite experiences from around the world? I remember enjoying the conversation with the likes of the World's first CISO, Steve Katz from New York, to learning about Dan Lohrmann, who was the former Chief Security Officer for the State of Michigan about his accomplishments, to extracting out other C-exec thought leadership that you will come to discover in the book itself.

Never would I have thought that with the release of the book itself, would also bring the pleasure of meeting so many new people: my Cyber Risk Leaders Readers!

The Readers

It's astonishing seeing some of the countries and cities that Cyber Risk Leaders have popped up in - New York, Perth, Singapore, New Zealand, San Francisco, Ubud, Cambodia, Netherlands, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Croatia, India and many more.

But beyond the book travelling the globe, far more important are the people themselves who became owners of Cyber Risk Leaders. From CISOs of former Presidents and Prime Ministers, to renowned cryptographers like Bruce Schneier - these are just some I've had the privilege of personally meeting with in this journey. Every day, I'm still amazed to find out where Cyber Risk Leaders has popped up, for example, a trusted source have told me that the former President of the Dominican Republic is also in possession of the book. It's great to know that so many different people are taking an interest in learning from the approaches of different leaders in the book.

The Reviews

It was heartening to read the reviews that have come in. For example, I quote an excerpt of one that was written on Medium:

"This book lets me virtually meet more than thirty CxOs from various industries and lets me learn their valuable insights and challenges. Each chapter is fully furnished with thought-provoking real-life stories."

It was also an honour to see a book review of Cyber Risk Leaders featured on the U.S. Govtech website including the foreword which was written by M.K. Palmore, retired FBI Assistant Special Agent formerly in charge of the FBI San Francisco Cyber Branch.

"This large and diverse group paints an interesting narrative of the state of play in enterprise cyber risk."

It makes it very meaningful to know the impact Cyber Risk Leaders have made on the individuals. Thank you Richard Burke for the wonderful review that you've left on Amazon!

The Winners

A few months ago, I thought it would be fun to run a #CyberRiskLeaders photo competition and it was great to see the creative plugs that appeared on social media. I had many favourites and alas, I could only pick my top 3 winners. I know it's long awaited so here are the winners announced in no order of preference. Congratulations Carmen Marsh! I thought it was such a nice touch that she made a collage of her travels in Croatia, the land of #GameofThrones and even brought Cyber Risk Leaders book around for some light reading. Carmen is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to being an influencer in our community. Together, we've hosted Twitter's first ever global CISOs Town Hall, and if you look at the year she has had in 2019, I can't even keep up! Her video for the #JaneFranklandChallenge2019 sums it up very nicely, and I absolutely love the work that she has been doing! #MakingaDifference

The next up is Louisa Vogelenzang. Her tweets when she first started her reading showed a photo of her dog waiting for her to finish so that they could get on with their game of catch. Weeks later, I spotted another post when she brought Cyber Risk Leaders to finish her chapters in New York.

Louisa is such a down to earth person and consciously looks at ways to contribute to the cybersecurity community. Aside from her full time job, she's also the co-host and producer of the Cybersecurity Café podcast and the co-founder of the Women Speak Cyber project. What a legend!

The final special mention goes to Silvana Macri, the founder of Stay Cyber Safe. I absolutely love how she has an abundance of energy and runs different initiatives, and is very vocally supportive of her peers in the industry. It's amazing how she organised Kevin Mitnick's (aka the World's Most Famous Hacker) first ever appearance in Perth for guests to get an inside to his hacking techniques and journey from a 'Black Hat' hacker to a 'White Hat' hacker.?What a big surprise it was to see her post this on LinkedIn after, that he ran out of his books and one of his fans asked him to sign my book instead! It really just warms my heart to see what a great community we have.

And an additional announcement, congratulations also to last year's AISA book prize winner, Kirtar Oza. Apparently, he brought the book back to India on his holidays and I just had to share this photo that he sent - against the backdrop of Shaniwar Wada, which he explained, was a historical fortification built in 1732 in the city of Pune in India.

Reflections

Honestly, 2019 was such a year of many personal milestones and dreams come true. Never would I have imagined that the enriching lessons that were written down in this book to have spread so far and wide. From a local book order request from the organisers of the CSO Publisher Award Gala night to gift Cyber Risk Leaders to their winners, to the first ever Cyber Security Asia conference in Cambodia which saw a sold out of the books, to book signing sessions in Malaysia for the ISACA Kuala Lumpur Chapter.

Indeed, it has been a great year and I will always remain thankful to the community who supported and celebrated this personal milestone together with me. In fact, when I announced to my network how I felt when I first laid eyes on the book in the bookstores, I was overwhelmed to see the response and over 26,000 views on the post alone.

To everyone who've been such a great support; from those who've contributed in different ways, to those who've celebrated together with me, I just want to say a big thank you. It has been an honour walking this journey together with my beautiful network, many of whom have become friends as well.
