Cyber Insurance 101.3 - Why You Might Not Be Clicking 'Buy Now' in the Digital Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, in a magical land filled with Wi-Fi hotspots and enchanted emojis, many individuals and organizations refused to buy cyber insurance despite the looming cyber dragons. Why, you ask?
?
Let’s journey through the enchanted forest of reasons and discover the top excuses these digital denizens and electronic kingdoms use to avoid clicking the “buy now†button.
?
1. Cost Concerns:
Sometimes the price of cyber insurance can seem as steep as the tallest tower in Spend-A-Ville. Many villagers would rather spend their golden coins on tangible treasures like the latest crystal-clear mirror (smartphone) or a subscription to the Royal Streaming Service than on an invisible safety net for their digital lives.
2. Perceived Low Risk:
"I won't be cursed by a cyber witch," said every villager ever. The belief that they are unlikely targets for cyber sorcery keeps them from seeing the true danger. The "it won't happen to me" enchantment is powerful and makes them underestimate the risks, dismissing the need for personal cyber insurance as if it were a mere fairy tale.
3. Lack of Awareness:
For some, cyber insurance might as well be a dragon’s egg. There’s a surprising lack of awareness about what personal cyber insurance is and what it covers. If people don’t understand the spell, they’re not going to use it. It's like trying to sell a magical snow shovel in the middle of a sunny desert.
4. Complexity and Confusion:
Even if they know about the enchanted protection, the complexity can be off-putting. The policies are often filled with jargon and legalese that can make anyone’s head spin like a cursed spinning wheel. Deciphering what's covered, what's not, and why it matters can feel like trying to read the fine print on an enchanted scroll written in Elvish.
5. Trust Issues:
There's also a matter of trust. Some villagers are skeptical about insurance wizards in general. They worry that these wizards will find any excuse not to fulfill their magical promises or that the whole thing is a scam concocted by dark sorcerers. This distrust makes them hesitant to invest in another enchanted product, especially one as nebulous as cyber insurance.
6. Reliance on Existing Security Spells:
Many individuals rely on existing security spells like antivirus potions, firewalls, and magical shields built into their devices. They feel these protections are sufficient, not realizing that these tools might not cover the full spectrum of risks that cyber insurance would address.

7. Overconfidence in Own Tech Savviness:
There's a segment of the population that believes their tech-savvy skills are enough to keep themselves safe. They use moats of firewalls, and strong passwords, avoid suspicious scrolls (emails), and stay informed about the latest dark magic threats. This overconfidence can lead them to believe that they are invincible in the digital forest, thus negating the perceived need for insurance.
8. Lack of Tangible Benefits:
Unlike carriage or castle insurance, where the benefits are clear and tangible (think: carriage repairs or castle rebuilding), the benefits of cyber insurance can seem as abstract as a fairy’s whisper. The idea of protecting against something that might never happen isn't as compelling as knowing you'll be covered if your roof gets blown off by a dragon.
9. Minimal Regulation and Standardization:
The cyber insurance market is still relatively new and lacks the standardization seen in other enchanted insurance sectors. This variability can cause confusion and make villagers wary of investing in a policy that might differ drastically from one wizard to another.
10. Competing Priorities:
Finally, people have competing financial priorities. Between health insurance, carriage insurance, castle insurance, and saving for a rainy day or a dragon attack, cyber insurance often falls to the bottom of the priority list. It’s seen as a “nice to have†rather than a necessity.
?
In conclusion, while cyber insurance offers valuable protection in our increasingly digitally enchanted forest, a combination of cost, complexity, lack of awareness, and perceived low risk keeps many from taking the plunge. As cyber threats continue to evolve, however, it may only be a matter of time before more recognize the value of adding this layer of magic to their digital lives and business. Until then, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and our passwords long and strong enough to fend off even the craftiest of cyber goblins.
Disclaimer:
I confess that I am not a subject matter expert in the topic of cyber insurance and admittingly (just like many out there), I only learned about cyber insurance in 2023. There is no shortage of information online (which is awesome) but most of the content I have consumed is quite serious and a little dry (perhaps a reflection of the concerns in the industry). This article is my attempt to (over) simplify key learnings and to add a bit of humour to an otherwise solemn topic so that when explained to a 13-year-old kid, he or she can even understand.
