The House Rules Committee has paved the way for floor debate on revised legislation to reauthorize a controversial surveillance program, breaking a months-long stalemate among Republican lawmakers just days before the law is due to expire. The panel voted 9-2 on Tuesday night in favor of a rule for debate on a measure to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Businesses and other organizations will be able to submit samples of malware to the U.S. government for analysis under a new program run by the nation's top cybersecurity agency. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said its Malware Next-Gen service has been available to government and military workers since November, but it is now opening it up to the private sector.
U.S. Cyber Command expanded the use of its elite digital warfighting corps in 2023, deploying the team nearly two dozen times around the globe to uncover malicious software and bolster the defenses of allies, the command's chief said on Wednesday. The command sent personnel from the Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF) on 22 'hunt forward' missions to 17 different countries last year alone, Air Force Gen. Timothy Haugh, who also leads the National Security Agency, said in written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Germany is set to introduce a dedicated cyber branch as part of its military restructuring, the country's defense minister announced on Thursday, with an aim to combat increasing cyber aggression from Russia toward NATO members. The expanded German Cyber and Information Domain Service (CIR) will become the fourth independent branch of the country's armed forces.

The agency said it has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking which will home in on how to make sure automakers and wireless service providers are moving to help abuse survivors.
House Republican leaders on Wednesday failed to overcome bipartisan opposition to proceeding with debate on the renewal of expiring government surveillance powers. Lawmakers voted 193-228 against bringing up a bill to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which will sunset on April 19.
