Cyber Careers: Let's Talk about Yours
Friday's blog series will be about careers in cybersecurity. I have asked someone the questions below. You can then ask some follow up questions to get to know about them.
Today, I will start with me and we can see how this goes....
QUESTIONS:
Name:
Michael Scott Schindler. I go by Michael and Scott. It's confusing. So am I.
Title:
vCISO at two healthcare companies (California) and Field CISO Advisor at one other (Southlake, TX) . Big fan of fractional working. Makes life very interesting.
I worked at big companies as every role under the sun and I can say I much prefer the interpersonal connectivity of smaller companies and seeing how you can make a difference.
Education & Certs:
I completed an associate degree in general studies in 1995 at Tarrant County Junior College. I never went back to school. I felt that formal education was too slow for what we do and until now there were not programs of particular interest.. I have over 70 certifications, mostly because I taught everything Microsoft, but also Cisco, Checkpoint, VMware, CISSP in 2000 and 2016, and so on.

I intend to start the bachelors program and my masters as soon as we build the new program at Collin College. I will stop teaching and go back to school for fun and growth.
Day to Day Activity
A lot!
Business impact assessments, controls reviews, risk assessments, policy reviews and development, incident response program development and tabletops, data governance, and everything else cyber or even partially cyber.
Writing & Teaching the new Honors Security Management Capstone course at Collin College, Supporting North Texas ISSA & Tech Titans, building cybersecurity events, and connecting people.
Oh and writing LinkedIn blogs to find people to share this life with.
I also have a dinner series that I maintain to meet people and connect them. The Sagebrush Society is a private club that I created to bring IT and Cyber leaders together. We have dinner at a different steak restaurants, every other week, allowing the different members of the group to come together.
Passion
I want to meet and know everyone. I think we spend way too much time in the transactions of humanity and way to little in the nuance of the humans with which we interact. Everyone has a story and I want to hear it. Everyone contributes to humanity and I want to know how.

2 年Michael Schindler, we all have a unique story. I am constantly amazed at the different paths people take to get where they are today. I have a doctoral professor/mentor who regularly says, "if you ever question whether you are in the right place or stage, know that you are right where you are meant to be." I want to publically thank and acknowledge you for helping to make me a better presence on LinkedIn, and for challenging my thinking so that I consider all sides of a discussion. They say it "takes a village to raise a child." I do not think it stops at the start of adulthood.
