The Definition of a Cloud Service

Ensuring you understand the definition of a cloud service can come in handy when carrying out the Cyber Essentials process.

In the context of Cyber Essentials, a cloud service refers to any internet-based service provided by a third-party that offers resources, applications, or data storage.

This encompasses various models such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Types of Cloud Services

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS):

Provides virtualised computing resources over the internet. Users can rent virtual machines, storage, and networks. Examples include Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 and Microsoft Azure.

Platform as a Service (PaaS):

Offers a platform allowing customers to develop, run, and manage applications without dealing with the underlying infrastructure. Examples include Google App Engine and Microsoft Azure App Services.

Software as a Service (SaaS):

Delivers software applications over the internet, typically through a web browser. Users access the software without managing or installing it locally. Examples include Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce.

Function as a Service (FaaS):

A serverless computing model that allows developers to run code in response to events without managing servers. Examples include AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Functions.
