The infamous, FSB-connected Turla group took over other hackers' servers, exploiting their USB drive malware for targeted espionage.
THE RUSSIAN CYBERESPIONAGE group known as Turla became infamous in 2008 as the hackers behind agent.btz, a virulent piece of malware that spread through US Department of Defense systems, gaining widespread access via infected USB drives plugged in by unsuspecting Pentagon staffers. Now, 15 years later, the same group appears to be trying a new twist on that trick: hijacking the USB infections of other hackers to piggyback on their infections and stealthily choose their spying targets. ...?more

Operations
IT teams are going to have their hands full in 2023, but these three trends will likely play a key role in keeping operations running effectively.
For many IT teams, 2023 is looking to be a year of daunting challenges.
With fears of economic slowdown and recession, budgets are likely to be constrained as executives ask IT teams to do more with less. IT operations and management teams will not only have to "keep the lights on" and maintain operations but do so in a more optimized way than ever before. Few organizations, even with constrained budgets, will want to just maintain operations, as there is a need to continually develop new services as well. ...?more
In today's world, all organizations have put a significant emphasis on drawing insights from data collected from varied systems (both internal and external).
These insights have given an edge to companies in making better decisions and conducting business. An important aspect of collecting the data and curating it falls into the hands of the Enterprise Content Management team (ECM), which has an immense responsibility in collecting both structured and unstructured content from a wide range of sources and storing high-volume content along with its metadata. ...?more

The cloud is an ever-growing technology domain that provides numerous advantages over traditional server-based systems and computing capabilities.
The shift toward cloud-based architectures has been attractive for many organizations due to its various benefits, such as increased flexibility, efficiency and performance, and the possibility for innovation and new capabilities.
However, despite the cloud's potential to enhance the resiliency of businesses in a hybrid work environment, most companies still have a significant gap in their cloud infrastructure regarding observability. Observing and monitoring the performance of cloud-based systems is vital for any cloud-computing implementation that utilizes open-source platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform. ...?more

Ransomware continues to be a growing and increasingly dangerous threat to businesses.
The numbers are ominous: Every 11 seconds a business experiences a ransomware attack, according to current research from Veeam. Most organizations recognize the urgency of protecting their networks, but they may not realize that's only half the battle. Experience shows that virtually all attackers also try to destroy or encrypt backup repositories. Without backups that can be used for a fast recovery, victims have no choice but to pay the ransom. Here's how to defend against that threat. ...?more

At AWS, security is job zero. Starting today, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) encrypts all new objects by default.
Now, S3 automatically applies server-side encryption (SSE-S3) for each new object, unless you specify a different encryption option. SSE-S3 was first launched in 2011.
As Jeff wrote at the time: 'Amazon S3 server-side encryption handles all encryption, decryption, and key management in a totally transparent fashion. When you PUT an object, we generate a unique key, encrypt your data with the key, and then encrypt the key with a 'root' key.' ...?more
