CXC Newsletter: June 2024

We have lots of opportunities this month, with two project manager vacancies and six open invitations to quote. We also have three newly published reports and great news that one of our directors has been awarded a prestigious science medal for his climate work.

  1. Project manager vacancies
  2. Climate impact of food consumed in Scotland
  3. Land-based labour market
  4. Carbon Neutral Islands sector readiness and skills
  5. Six open research calls including financing for heat networks, Scottish climate survey and training provision in onshore wind and solar industries
  6. Medal for CXC Science Director

1. Project manager vacancies

Join the ClimateXChange team in one of these two roles leading the development and delivery of our portfolios of work related to:

  • Climate resilience and social change (Closes Friday 21 June)
  • Climate and economy (Closes Monday 15 July)

Both roles work providing evidence across a range of policies relevant to Scotland’s Climate Change Plan, Just Transition Plans and the Scottish National Adaptation Plan. Get the full job descriptions and apply via the University of Edinburgh's recruitment website.

2. Climate impact of food consumed in Scotland

Fish and chips

There is significant uncertainty around the magnitude of emissions associated with food consumed in Scotland, according to this report.

The report examines current evidence on dietary patterns and their associated emissions to establish a baseline understanding of the climate impact of food consumed in Scotland.

While cereals, vegetables and potatoes are important contributors to nutrient intake, meat and dairy are important contributors to both nutrient intake and greenhouse gas emissions in Scottish diets.

3. Land-based labour market and rural land use

Sheep in a rural setting

This report explores the condition and composition of the land-based labour market and the potential for scenario-based modelling to project future labour market requirements.

The research found that Scotland’s national labour market has experienced a number of changes over the past few decades, including demographic ageing, advancing technological change and an increase in people with higher level skills. Recruitment, retention and labour shortages are a problem for employers in some rural areas.

4. Carbon Neutral Islands sector readiness and skills

The Carbon Neutral Islands project is a Scottish Government commitment to support six Scottish islands (Islay, Raasay, Hoy, Yell, Barra and Great Cumbrae) to become carbon neutral by 2040.

This report presents evidence on the readiness status of island businesses to meet this challenge. The research found that time and cost are key barriers to businesses in tracking carbon footprints and developing a decarbonisation strategy.

5. Open research project calls

We commission our research projects on behalf of Scottish Government policy teams working to tackle climate change and meet Scotland's net zero targets.

We are in a period of intensive project development, with more research calls likely to published soon. To ensure you don't miss any calls between newsletters, sign up to receive all our invitations to quote directly in your mailbox: Subscribe to our emails

There are currently six open invitations to quote for specific research projects.

  • International comparisons of low carbon hydrogen standards and end-to-end carbon emissions intensities - Closes 17 June
  • Scottish climate survey - Closes 19 June
  • Estimating costs and impacts of decarbonising heat in the public sector - Closes 24 June
  • The role of enforcement for achieving compliance with Heat in Buildings proposals - Closes 26 June
  • Training provision assessment and opportunities for enhancement in Scotland’s onshore wind and solar industries - Closes 27 June
  • Present and future financing for heat networks in Scotland - Closes 9 July
