ClimateXChange
We're Scotland's centre of expertise on climate change, connecting research and policy.
It's your last chance to submit a proposal for one of our postdoctoral research opportunities - we've now extended the deadline to 5 September. This month you can read about our seven new research reports on fascinating topics like climate-friendly diets, carbon storage and social housing decarbonisation. We're also excited to release the first episode of our new podcast, discussing climate risk and knowledge brokers with Dr Kate Donovan.
1. Post-doctoral research opportunities deadline extended
We have extended the deadline for our four invitations to quote for post-doctoral research opportunities. They are now closing on 5 September.
If you are interested in any of these areas of work please contact the relevant Project Manager: [email protected] or [email protected]
2. Looking ahead – developing our Centre of Expertise
Anne Marte Bergseng started as the new ClimateXChange (CXC) Programme Manager this month. In her blog post, she discusses upcoming plans for CXC, including the new cohort of postdoctoral researchers and a series of 'ignite' workshops.
3. Dietary guidance for healthy and climate-friendly diets
The number of jurisdictions that have food-based dietary guidelines with extensive climate focus has been increasing, this international review has found.
Scottish food-based dietary guidelines could include greenhouse gas emission criteria such as reducing meat, moderating dairy and increasing vegetables, according to the report.
4. Social housing decarbonisation case studies
This research developed a series of case studies to support social landlords in their delivery of zero direct emissions heating systems projects.
Lessons learned include considering ways to engage and support residents, planning impact evaluation and the benefits of pilot projects when multiple or larger buildings are involved.
5. Vehicle to grid for transport decarbonisation
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology uses smart charging and also enables sending power from an electric vehicle back to a house and on to the national grid.
Investing in V2G solutions targeting domestic passenger cars and fleet vehicles that are not used heavily daily and can charge overnight could accelerate decarbonisation of road transport, the study has found.
6. Effective environmental measures in agriculture
To deliver climate change mitigation and adaptation, nature restoration and high-quality food production, the Scottish Government produced their vision for agriculture.
This report identifies metrics that could be used to monitor the success of proposed measures to achieve this vision, including consideration of cost-effectiveness, practicalities and the skills and capabilities of those tasked with monitoring.
7. GB wholesale electricity market reform: impacts and opportunities for Scotland
This study assesses the likely impact of an electricity pricing model known as locational marginal pricing (LMP), as well as its potential alternatives, in the context of the Scottish Government’s Draft Energy Strategy and Just Transition Plan ambitions.
The report is accompanied by a non-technical summary. The report and summary are both available on our website.
8. Onshore and inshore storage of carbon dioxide
This study explored the potential total CO2 storage capacity in Scottish inshore areas and the availability of onshore emissions originating from biomass, known as bio-CO2.
The researchers addressed five elements of carbon capture and storage: licensing, storage, sources, timeframes and cost.
9. Podcast: Climate risk and knowledge brokers with Dr Kate Donovan
We have launched a new podcast called 'Evidence for climate policy in Scotland'.
In each episode, our guests discuss climate change research relevant to policy in Scotland, in simple, non-technical language.
Episode 1 is out now and features Dr Kate Donovan discussing her research on climate risk and adaptation, and the importance of knowledge brokers bringing science to policymaking.
That's all for now - make sure to subscribe to get next month's update on LinkedIn!
