Public security penalty expansion risks ‘abuse of power,’ legal experts say

China’s top legislature is seeking public comment on draft public security law revisions that expand the scope of punishment for a wide range of behaviors, including cheating on exams, organizing pyramid schemes and unauthorized drone flights.

However, some of the proposals include penalties for wearing clothes deemed “detrimental to the feelings of the Chinese nation,” drawing criticism online from legal experts who said those measures violate people’s freedom and could lead to abuse of power. ?

Premier Li Qiang proposed a conference next year for East Asian economies to discuss further integrating regional supply chains to make them more efficient and resilient while leveraging their comparative advantages.

Li Qiang made the recommendation in Jakarta Wednesday while speaking at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Plus Three (APT) Summit — a gathering of ASEAN members plus China, Japan and South Korea. He also suggested an additional seminar in 2024 to discuss digital solutions for the region’s supply chains. ?

A mega solar-to-hydrogen factory was commissioned in China, marking a milestone for the country’s — and potentially the world’s — effort to produce more green hydrogen, a fuel seen as key for slashing global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Sinopec Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Pilot Project entered full operation in the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region after its in-house solar power station was connected to the grid, China Petroleum & Chemical Corp., or Sinopec, the plant’s operator, said Aug. 30. ?

Baowu Steel forges deal to develop Simandou iron ore mine

The world’s largest steel producer, China Baowu Steel Group Corp. Ltd., officially inked a deal with a Chinese-backed consortium to develop part of the massive West African Simandou mine, the state-owned steel giant said Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Baowu subsidiary Baowu Resources Co. Ltd. and Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS) will work together to develop blocks 1 and 2 in the northern part of the Simandou project in Guinea. ?

China fines top academic database $6.84 million

China’s cyber security regulator imposed a 50 million yuan ($6.84 million) fine on the country’s largest academic database for violations in handling personal information.

The operators of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and 14 related apps violated the principles of collecting only necessary personal information with consent, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said Wednesday. ?
