Roberto Mancini has joined the exodus to Saudi Arabia, but not the Saudi Pro League. The 58-year-old?has been announced as new coach of the Saudi Arabia men’s?national team, two weeks after resigning as Italy’s head coach.?Mancini?will take charge?for the first time on September 8, when Saudi Arabia face Costa Rica at Newcastle’s St James’?Park. A?Euro 2020?winnerwith Italy, he will be tasked with winning the next AFC Asian Cup, which takes place in Qatar in January and February 2024. Meanwhile, his successor with the Azzurri, Napoli’s Serie A-winning coach?Luciano Spalletti, officially begins his role on September 1. ? Elsewhere on the international scene, Eileen Gleeson has succeeded?Vera Pauw?– on an interim basis – as manager of the Republic of Ireland?women’s national team. Gleeson will step up from her role as?Pauw’s assistant,?leading the team when they begin their Nations League campaign against Northern Ireland on September 23. On the men’s side,?Manchester United academy?coach Paul McShane has been appointed assistant coach with the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21s. In Canada, Englishman?John Herdman?has resigned as head coach of the Canadian men’s national team to take charge of MLS club Toronto FC. The 48-year-old led Canada to their first World Cup finals in 36 years in 2022, after leading the women’s team to bronze at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
It may be early days in the 2023/24 club football season,?but the managerial changes have already begun.?Lee Johnson?(above) has departed Hibernian after 15 months in charge at Easter Road. Former Hibs manager?Neil Lennon?is among the potential candidates being linked with the vacancy. ? South of the border,?Charlton Athletic?have parted company with manager Dean Holden.?The 43-year-old took over?at the Valley last December,?but departed the League One club after four defeats in their opening five league games.?Jason Pearce has taken over on an interim basis, while the club undertake what they have called a “thorough recruitment process”. In academy news,?Peterborough United?have appointed?Dan Robinson as the club’s new academy manager. He joins from?Burton Albion, where he had been academy manager?since 2016.?And after a decade as?Wigan Athletic’s academy manager, Gregor Rioch has been promoted to sporting director. Rioch will work closely?with Latics manager?Shaun Maloney.
