Interview by Krushi Kiranraj

What do you do at the VARLab, and what do you love most about your work?

My title is DLS Software Developer, but I have been working on web-based projects recently. I love the collaborative aspect; sharing ideas and learning from different perspectives to solve problems is very satisfying. Plus, the constant evolution of technology keeps things fresh and exciting.

?

What has been your favorite project to work on so far?

It has been almost 4 years since I joined VARLab as a Co-Op student. I am now working here as a full-time Software Developer, so I have had a lot of opportunities to work with different technologies and numerous projects and embrace various challenges. I enjoyed working on every project I was assigned, but if I had to choose which one I liked the most, it would be vConestoga. This project has been particularly challenging and gave me the opportunity to learn a lot of new technologies.

?

What skill or knowledge would you like to develop more?

I would like to expand my knowledge of server development and maintenance, as well as deepen my skills in web technologies.

?

Who or what inspires you in your work with digital learning experiences and simulations?

I'm inspired by the potential of digital learning to create engaging and interactive experiences that can transform how people learn.

?

What are some of the ways you measure success in developing learning simulations?

We can measure success in multiple ways: User Feedback – collecting quality feedback from learners about their experiences; Learning Outcomes – assessing whether learners achieve the intended knowledge and skills; and Engagement Metrics – tracking time spent in the experience, completion rates, and interactions. Together, these are some ways we can measure success.

?

How have you grown professionally since you started working?

I've definitely grown professionally in several areas. I've expanded my proficiency in various programming languages and frameworks, gained experience managing projects from concept to deployment, and strengthened my understanding of agile methodologies and team collaboration. I've also deepened my knowledge of user experience (UX) principles and had the opportunity to mentor junior developers and work in diverse teams. I could mention many other skills, but this paragraph would become too long!

?

What role does learning from other team members play in your work?

Learning from other team members is crucial in my work as a software developer. Collaborating with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise not only enhances my coding skills but also exposes me to new learning opportunities every day. Informal discussions allow for exchanging tips, best practices, and innovative techniques. Additionally, constructive feedback from my colleagues is invaluable for identifying areas for my improvement and personal growth.

?

Can you recall your first experience with VR? How did it make you feel, and how has your perception of VR changed since then?

I do recall trying a VR headset for the first time; it was actually before I joined the VARLab, and I remember it felt weird and exciting at the same time. I was curious to learn more about VR, as it was quite new to me then, and I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to work with it at VARLab.

?

What was something that made you happy recently?

I had the opportunity to participate in the WUKF World Karate Championship in Mexico this July, and it was an incredible experience! Although I wasn’t completely satisfied with my results, competing at such a high level, meeting martial artists from around the world, and representing my country brought me immense joy and made it a truly memorable experience

What are you grateful for these days?

I am grateful for the opportunities I have these days. I can learn and grow as a person anytime and anywhere. I appreciate having the chance and time to practice karate, and I’m also thankful for the ability to escape the city and go fishing (I just caught my first-ever trout recently).

?

If you could train in martial arts with any movie character, who would it be and why?

It would be Bruce Lee, especially with his character in “Enter the Dragon”. I believe his technical skills, mindset, and cultural impact would make for a truly memorable experience. Learning from him would not only enhance physical skills but also foster a deeper understanding of martial arts.
