Is the CV/Resume "Dead"??

Is the CV/Resume "Dead"?

Are CV's or resumes "dead"?

No!

While it's true that there are new technologies and platforms that are changing the way job seekers and employers interact, the CV remains a key tool in the job search process.

Many employers still require a CV as part of their application process, and it's often the first point of contact between a job seeker and a potential employer. A well-crafted CV can help job seekers stand out from the competition and showcase their skills and experience.

That being said, it's also true that newer technologies such as applicant tracking systems (ATS) and online job boards are becoming more prevalent in the hiring process. These technologies can help streamline the application process for employers and make it easier for job seekers to find job opportunities.

However, even with these technology advancements, a strong CV is still an essential part of the job search process. It's important for job seekers to keep their CV up-to-date and tailored to each job they apply for to maximise their chances of success.

Making your CV stand out can be a challenge, but here are some tips to help you:

  1. Customise your CV for each job: Whilst this is more "time consuming", you must ensure that you tailor your CV to match the requirements of the job you're applying for. This shows the employer that you've read the job description and have the skills and experience they're looking for.
  2. Highlight your achievements: Use bullet points to highlight your achievements and successes in your previous roles. Be specific and use numbers, statistics and real data to back up your claims.
  3. Use a clear and easy-to-read format: Make it simple! Use a professional font and make sure your CV is easy to read. Use bullet points, headings, and spacing to break up text and make it easy to navigate.
  4. Keep it concise (slight myth but worth including): Your CV should ideally be no more than two pages long. Be selective about the information you include and focus on what's most relevant to the job. The myth- if your initial one or two pages have grabbed the attention of the employer, they are going to read on if it is slightly longer.
  5. Show your personality: While your CV should be professional, it's okay to inject some personality into it. Use your personal statement or hobbies and interests section to show who you are as a person and what makes you unique.
  6. Use keywords: Many employers use applicant tracking systems to screen CVs before they're even seen by a human. Using keywords from the job description can help your CV get past the ATS and in front of a human recruiter.
  7. Get feedback: Ask a friend, mentor or professional to review your CV and provide feedback. They may be able to spot areas for improvement or suggest ways to make your CV stand out.

Remember, your CV is often the first impression an employer has of you, so it's important to make it count. By following these tips and customising your CV for each job, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by potential employers.

Although there are so many modern ways now to source candidates, for example through video CVs or LinkedIn Profiles CVs definitely are not dead. A lot of employers still want to take the more traditional route of CVs. Great blog post you have written Ruben Hankinson
