A CV, Your Presentation on Paper…!
In these days of digital, on-line and social media mediums, the old-fashioned CV is still the foundation for these mediums and more importantly, is still requested as part of recruitment and selection processes by direct employers and recruitment agencies. Make no mistake that whatever way you present your CV, it is still prospective employers’ first impression of you and you cannot make a good first impression a second time.
So, through your own abilities or through professional help, you should get your CV into a state that literally sells you to potential employers and / or recruiters i.e., when they read /scan through it, they want to meet with you.
To ensure that after they have received your CV, read it and will make contact with you, consider the following actions to do / include in, what I call, ‘Your Presentation on Paper’:
Tailor it to the job / organisation that you are applying for / to
Source live, open jobs that are of interest to you with respect to the employer and the job advertised. Use key words and statements from the job description throughout your CV, especially in the first page and in your Career History and / or Employment History sections.
Develop a Generic CV for Recruitment Agencies
You should have a general / generic CV developed from studying various job descriptions for recruitment agencies. Try to include most things that most jobs / employers are looking for from someone of your expertise, knowledge and experience.
Keep it to 2-3 pages
There is no hard or fast rule about how many pages your CV should be. Over the decades, 2-3 pages has been the norm and accepted. If you need to have it longer, consider a one pagesummary page, entitled an Executive Summary, though this is normally used for high level managerial / leadership roles.
Separate Responsibilities and Achievements
Some job applicants mix their day-to-day tasks, duties, responsibilities in with their achievements and vice versa. It is better to separate them by having a separate section for

Key Achievements & Accomplishments.
In this section, include achievements and accomplishments from your Career, Academia and Personally.
Include Voluntary Work
Employers should know and would like to know what you do outside of your daily job. If you do community work, voluntary work, charity work, fundraising i.e., anything that you do that is personally rewarding, not paid; should be included in your CV. It will further demonstrate to your prospective employer(s) qualities like good work ethic, helpfulness, empathy, caring and being a peoples person.
Get your CV up-to-date and ready for jobs that you see advertised and may have a short ‘opening’ period…
